Default Newby To KTM Adventure 990

Greetings. Just picked up a new Adventure 990R yesterday and love the bike. Traded in a CRF450X, WR250R, Vstrom 1000, and KLR 650. So far it seems very straightforward. I do have some basic questions...

Regular fuel vs premium?

Oil change seems quite involved...more than just drop the drain plug and change the filter. Any hints?

Trunk options, only KTM or are there others that are equally high quality.

Exhaust, probably leave stock unless someone convinces me that I'll be better off with a Akra or ...?

Thanks and am looking forward to hearing from you all.

Warm regards,

Dr. G.

Welcome.

Not trying to steer you away to another site, but if you have
not checked out this website, it's arguably the best adventure
rider site out there.

Welcome aboard - I bought a 990 SMR over Memorial Day weekend and had to sell a few bikes too, but I kept my KLR

My owners manual mandates premium, you are allowed to run 1 tank of lower octane fuel in a pinch but you have to pull the seat disconnect and pull a wire that I believe retards your timing.

My first oil change wasn't bad, the filter was on the left side and there were 2 screens, one on each side. Everything was pretty straightforward except the oring for the oil filter cover was pinched from the factory and damaged. Since I was going to the track the next weekend I cleaned it up and tried to reuse it, but it leaked like a sieve . No KTM dealers, or hydraulic shops, around on a Thursday nite, so I drained the sump again and found a smaller thicker oring and stretched it - bingo, no leaks. The dealer has since sent me a new one for my next change. If it hadn't been for that the oil change would have been 30 min.

I bought a SW Motech aluminum rack from Twisted Throttle so I would have a place to strap on a soft bag. The fuel tank is plastic so a magnetic tank bag is out. They also sell a plate that snaps unto the rack for soft bags, they also sell different adaptors for the various hard bags like Givi, etc.

I have a set of Leo's coming next week, I'm pretty happy with the factory mapping so these slip ons won't require it to be changed. The Akro's sound sick too!

Here's a couple pics, you can just barely see the rack I installed. Enjoy your new ride!

Well, I guess I don't know how to attach a pic from my iPad, I'll post some up later today with my laptop

I was assunimg our LC8's are similar, maybe the Adventure is different and can use lower grade fuel ???

A couple pics:
You can barely see the rack on the tail - again I've seen a couple older Adventures but not sure if the mounting would be similar.

Good pics. Thanks. Haven't heard from others about the exhaust yet. Any word on FMF's? I saw a couple of folks on YouTube with them. They sound so so. Have heard that the ultimate would be a full Akro system which runs around $2400? Haven'f found any of those yet.

Just bought a 2011 Adventure Dakar, although delivery isn't for a couple weeks. Part of the selling point was "regular gas". I plan to use this to ride South America and I understand gasoline quality can be sketchy. I looked up specifications and it recommends regular, but I would be interested in what your manual says. Thanks ...
