Default Replacing Rear Spring?

Does anyone have a link to directions or a video on how to replace the rear spring? I just bought my 2003 250 SX and the previous owner had installed a heavier spring for a larger rider; would like to go back to stock.

Any help is appreciated. Thanks!!

Remove the top and bottom shock mount bolts(13mm) and pull the shock out between the wheel and exhaust system. Clamp the shock in a vise with the jaws holding the eye at the end of the shock body. Then undo the allen bolt clamping the preload adjuster to the shock body and wind the adjuster clockwise down the shock body until the spring is loose and there's about 5 to 10 mm free space between it and the collet at the other eye. Pull the collet down and you'll see a wire circlip in a groove on the eye casting. Remove this circlip and the collet will lift off allowing the removal of the spring. Fit new spring and reverse process.

Bajadog,

I just registered and am very pleased to have found your KTM Forum site.

I just bought a new Adventure 990 R model. I found the entire bike too high for me( I am 6ft, 200 lbs) and I am unable to get my foot down for sufficient support when stopping/parking on uneven surfaces and going around slow dirt trail corners. I rented a KTM 950 Adventure for an extended trip in South Africa and the seat height was perfect. Then the front suspension is too soft. I communicated with a a couple of suspension specialty shops( Chicago and Colorado) and they wanted me to bring the bike in for custom mods and advised anything but the full custom job will end in a disaster.

I just bought a pair of stiffer and slightly shorter front springs and intend to replace the current standard ones. I am wondering if it is possible to replace the rear spring with the "S" model one..?

Hi and welcome Maz.

Must be nice to be able to travel and ride.....

Did you test drive the non R model?

According to the KTM site:

Suspension travel front 210 mm R model 245 mm
Suspension travel rear 210 mm R model 245 mm

So 35mm is about 1.4".

Without really knowing the bikes, it would seem that
the shock should be the same except for the spring.

Not sure if it changes the suspension geometry and causes
any interferences in the frame/exhaust/etc.
