Default 690 Duke map select switch.

Can someone clarify what the setings are on the map select dial on the Duke?
Accordong to the manual, 1 is 'soft' 2 is 'performance' and 3 to 9 is standard.
Just had its first service and the salesman said 2 was standard and 3 was performance, then I spoke to the mechanic and he told me it was all bollocks and I wouldn't notice anything different whatever setting it was on.

Anyone actually know? Tried searching and can find sod all info anywhere.

I checked mine a while back and was set on 3 from the factory. I've had it on 2 ever since. The bike does seem a little quicker but the throttle is more touchy now. It's a little hard to ride smooth but this bike was ment to be ridden aggressively anyway.

Yeah, the maual is correct. 2 is 'performane' and 3 is standard. Lot of people compaining about snatchy throttle on 2, probably best left for the track.

Right hand side, behind the frame where your leg is. A rubber thing on a boyonet, pull it down and peel back the cover.

Page 100 of the manual.

Its in the manual.(page 105 in the 2008 Duke manual) If you are sitting on the bike, reach down under your right leg through the frame and its hanging on a silicone soft rubber hood over a tab. pull it down to remove it from the tab, then peel open the cover to expose the dial, you have to hold it so that the rounded corner of the dial plateau is on your upper left(10 oclock), that puts the reference mark at the 6 oclock position.(mine has a small white delta mark) The dial itself has 0-9 positions, 1 is for rain-30% power decrease, 2 is for sport, 3-9 for standard mode.

I know there has been some confusion on this dial and what it effects, I have read that the it is a timing retard, and yet the manual states that it is fuel mapping. I would love to know the answer?

I was playing with this dial yesterday, and :

#1 is definitely power limiting, feels asthmatic, would be good for the rain or new riders.

#2 is the snappiest for sure with alot of grunt, and top end as well, best for track or spirited riding.

#3 is more tame, very linear power delivery and smoothes the throttle delivery, good for daily commuting.

It works on my bike anyway.....

If #3 through #9 are standard, can a custom map be programed into one of those positions?

Yes, but you have to have a dealer do it as it requires a proprietary $1700 interface cable that only the KTM dealer network can get. It has been my experience that not many of the KTM dealers have this cable. I dont know if the Tuneboy or forthcoming Power Commander will allow access to the open slots.
