Well, I'm committed to buying an '08 690 Duke with 2200 miles. The bike is said to be in excellent condition, and has many optional items, touring windscreen, grip wind deflectors, gel seat and the original seat. I consider the deal to be pretty sweet, and it will be if the bike is as it was advertised. I really wanted a 2010 model, but the price difference just can't make me go that distance. I've paid a down payment with the difference due at pick up (in two weeks-ugh), and will have the opportunity to test it out and look it over before loading it up. So, would any of you mind telling me of things, sounds, etc. that I need to be looking for as I test it out? I've owned 9 different bikes and feel I should be a pretty good judge of its condition when I pick it up. I welcome all feedback.
Mike

I've got a stock '10 and have never seen another Duke lll, but I'll give my limited input. Mine has had no problems at 6500 miles.
The engine is clattery but of course shouldn't make any specific loud rapping noises ie. rocker arm bearing bad. Mine starts right up and the idle hunts around between 1500 and 1800 or so. It doesn't stall. It runs most all of the time at 4 or 5 bars on the temp gauge unless in traffic.
Unless the previous owner has changed it, and it's a pain without a good tool, the rear shock spring will have way too much preload for anyone this side of 200+ lbs. Fork will have a lot of stiction. Front brake may exhibit a mild pulse at very low speed.
The '08 gauges (meters) were known to leak and fail. I guess look for moisture inside and proper function.
Can't think of much else.

Roadrogue,
Thanks for the insights and comments. I'll be watchful of the speedo & sounds.

Was that the one on e-bay that didn't meet reserve? That was a great looking bike, I bid on it myself, but didn't do the buy-it-now because of the distance away from me.
I just bought a leftover 09 from a dealer in TX. It'll be here in 2 days.

P7HNV,
Yes, it is. I'm suppose to pick it up tomorrow and am hoping it was accurately advertised. Good for you on the '09. I had watched one in TX that was about $7.5K and thought seriously about shipping. If this doesn't work out tomorrow, I guess I'll still be looking. I know of a few '10's available, but at much higher cost. We'll see. Enjoy yours and best of luck with it.

Got it
Well, I picked up the bike yesterday. $5750 with 2284 miles. It has hand/wind guards, touring screen and gel seat, + original seat. Everything else is stock. I think that's pretty good. Overall it looks good, and I'll follow up with pics soon. Thanks for suggestions on things to check - very good advice. Any "user" suggestions I now welcome!

That's a great deal. Congratulations! I got my 09 from a dealer in TX for $6999 OTD. $500 to have it shipped here, then another $500 for local tax & registration, so right at $8000 for everything. It's suppose to arrive here within the next couple of hours. There were some dealers in PA & FL advertising leftover 09's in the $7500 range, but that would have put me up over $8500 when all done, so I'm happy with my deal. Already ordered the screen, then handguards once I see the layout of the bars....
