Exclamation Electrical fault and or short

Please help...

Last Thursday evening my bike took a really heavy downpour of rain and on Friday afternoon when I finally got around to starting it... Zilch

When I turned the ignition off the Combination Instrument FI Warning Lamp lit up orange, then the display showed the following sequence: Soft 1.1, then Dat 3.3 and the tachometer needle vibrated, then the instrument went dead again. No mechanical movement whatsoever!

For some odd reason I turned the ignition key to "On" with the Emergency OFF Switch in the "Off" position, and I could hear something buzzing under the tank. Once the tank removed it turned out to be the Light Relay vibrating and making a squealing noise which stops when I return the Emergency OFF Switch to the "On" position. I tried interchanging the relay with the two other relays but it continues to vibrate at the same socket, hence not the relay itself being the problem.

I WD40ed and blew compressed air through all the connectors i could find as well as the ignition switch and all other handlebar switches (all removed) still the same symptoms.

I checked all the fuses and they all are fine. I removed the battery and placed it on charge just in case it had lost charge due to a short circuit, but the the charger's ammeter registered zero, suggesting a full charge. I plan to try a new battery anyway just in case the charger was defective.

Tomorrow I'll have an electronic meter which I plan to use to check wire by wire for their integrity, in case one or more melted and is/are in contact with other wires or earth. I'm lucky to have a service manual to effectively follow the wires using the wiring diagrams, but it's gonna be really tedious.

For those who haven't read my introduction line, I live on a remote island without local dealer and the closest local dealer is a 700 km ship ride to the west in Mauritius, which is why I'm trying to find the fault myself rather than taking it straight to the shop.

Any suggestions or advice would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers
Reshad

Default Solution to electrical problem....

Hi folks,

Problem was with the battery. The make of battery mounted when i bought the bike was not intended to be operated on its side and as a result it got damaged dropping the voltage to around 9.4V. An electrician friend said it had nothing to do with the rain, it was just a question of time before the battery eventually died. A replacement battery sorted me right out

One week without bike meant the bus to work everyday

Cheers peeps, merry Xmas and a very happy new year to yous all,
Reshad
