I have the same problem. I always figured it was chain lube, kind of disturbing if it's motor oil though...

Same problem on my bike and it certainly isn't chain lube as I haven't put any on since i bought the bike. I also have the same black crap leaking down my gear pedal and onto the pot which means it must be coming from the sprocket area. On the upside, my chain is always lubed! Was told by a local mechanic it may be a defective oil seal behind the sprocket, leaking engine oil. As for it's colour, mine is jet black too, a tad worrying if it's engine oil! I've been keeping an eye on the oil level through the window...all good, but a leak this small would not be immediately visible through the window as we're talking in milliliters from the 1.6 L engine capacity.

Yackadus, do keep us informed whether you've solved the problem by changing part "9". BTW, the part "10" appears to be part of the gasket-set, so they may both be important in preventing oil from coming out the engine!

Bajadog, do you reckon a loose nut "13" on your exploded diagram could be causing such a leak?

Cheers,
Reshad

Not sure if you found a solution to your leak Yackadus. I'd left the island on business and on return i checked my engine sprocket nut straight away, and damn it is completely loose too! The lock washer (pt.2) had not been folded over, and it seems the previous owner used no Loctite either! If you look at Anzhsb's exploded diagram, you'll see the O-ring must very be tight (60Nm) probably against the roller bearing (pt.7) to make a perfect seal. Either it's that or the O-ring or oil seal is knackered. Anyway, I'm gonna cleanup the whole area tomorrow morning and get that nut torqued to 60 with a dose of Loctite then properly fold the lock washer to avoid any future loosening. Hopefully that'll cures my nasty drip!

Yup, according to the 2009 service manual, that i highly recommend for all work done on your Dukes, on page 91 in the engine reassembling section, the guideline for the engine sprocket nut is 60 Nm of torque using Loctite 243!
