Default User setting tool ust

ok, in my earlier post i mentioned the UST vs bazazz... and finally have some development. first off- i'd whole heartedly recommend the UST to anyone looking at an aftermarket fuel management system. it has proven remarkably easy to use, is made by KTM so you are guaranteed a level of workability, and you can controll parts of the electronics within it.

getting it work -with no outside help- was an outright pain in the ***, but with a little knowledge, should go swimingly for anyone that reads this.

physical installation was easy enough. fits right under the seat, into the stock harness points and sits into a little alcove right next to the battery. almost like it was made for it. go figure.

software download from ktm was a LOT easier than the web instructions made it sound. just download, install, plug in- windows finds the driver and it cant be any easier.

however, when you plug it into the bike, the UST can not find anything to talk to.

the reason is- the stock ECU is locked solid. KTM does not want you messing with anything unless they know about it. so you have to take the bike to the dealer, they have to contact KTM corporate with your VIN number and then are provided a 16 digit unlock code and instiall a UT map (utility). (more security than firing a frigin ICBM)

there is no easy way to do it. dealer, corporate, unlock. took me three weeks and a confused dealer to figure this out.

once unlocked- its as easy as pie. you can shut off the SAS, headlights, closed throttle fuel cut off, etc

and EFI manipulation is as easy as dragging a section of the three dimensional map (throttlepos/rpm/%change) up or down.

the cool thing is- the UST has a 12 channel data acquisition built right in. just set the on/off triggers and you can see the everything between the two cylinders in real time.

very cool.

took the bike to the dyno on tuesday and the UT map was darn near perfect. just needed a little bit of tweaking and the hp curve was as straight as a loading ramp. no dips or surges. perfectly straight up. the stoichiometric ratios were perfect.

so impressed.

have to miss the first race of the season, but will pick it up in March and will post back with some further details from using it in anger.

but if anyone else has a UST and wants to trade feedback... PLEASE post here.

i'd love to hear what others have experienced.

What did the dealer charge you to unlock the ECU if you don't mind saying?
Thanks.

dealership didnt charge me anything. now, i bought the bike from them, so that might be a mitigating factor.

but i cant see ANYONE charging more than an hours labor. and even that can probably be negotiated down- as its not your fault KTM locked the bike and you did buy their specific tool.

Great.
So once they unlocked it, you could ride home and then had full acess to the ECU?
Seems cleaner and cheaper than the Bazzaz set-up.

BTW, what exhaust are you running?
Are your O2 sensor's connected?
I'm installing the EVO4 exhaust with the club race kit air filter.
Just curious to know what your setup is with the UT map.
Thanks.

yup. theoretically you could drive in and out... but given the communication with corporate, i'd expect to leave it a day.

exhaust is an EVO 6, race air filter. thats it. ive the smaller base gaskets and cam jigs, but i want a bit more time on the bike before i start poking it.

O2 sensors were originally removed. (shows my age. two-plus decades ago, anything stock was crap and should be removed) this caused a problem with a hunting idle and poor performance. so block off resistors were installed. the thing idled high... but things were reliable.

then i got talking with people more in the know- and the o2 sensors on the bike are very good and are there for a reason. (crap o2 sensors have at most 2 wires and only pick up the most rudimentary measurements and have little to no effect on performance) these things are 4 wire and quite accurate (fyi- the BEST o2 sensors from bosch have 5 wires)

so removed the block off resistors, reinstalled the 02 sensors and my hat's off to the engineers at KTM for all their work. the thing reads them and adjusts for proper performance ratios. incredible.

HOWEVER... leaded gas can ruin o2 sensors. so if i go to a higher compression head and more aggressive valve timing... i'll need higher octane/leaded race gas, making the o2 sensors problematic and then have to tune it manually.

hhhmmmm.....
