Found this thread on another forum, FWIW:
"You have to check for continuity of all the ignition wiring, the continuity through any switches, and see if the alternator is generating.
For the alternator, stick a meter on the loose alternator output wires and kick the bike over. You should see some movement of the meter.
Ohm out the coil and the pickup coil (or points if the bike has points, which I doubt) to see if they match the service manual specs. Don't forget to checkout the spark plug as well as it can be part of the problem, too. Leave no stone unturned."
