Unhappy Starter

Hi mally here again. I am still having trouble starting my 2000 LC04. I push the Starter the engine kicks and starter then seems to disengage, I am refering to an online manual and it mentions a starter freewheel but not much info. I have tried several Batteries and had new brushes fitted to the starter. It sounds as if there was some teeth missing from the starter gears it catches and then noisily disengages. Starter still rotating but but not turning engine. Has anyone removed the starter gearing if so how do I get at it and what problems do I look for. Bike wont start on Kick either there is fresh fuel and a good spark. The Bike was like this when I bought but the starter would catch and it would start. I recently had the head off to replace a head gasket as I had water in the Oil.I set up the Cam with the engine lock bolt on and lined up the dot with the head ( On the left as you look at it) I tried spraying Easy Start into the air intake with Filter removed It started once ran it for a few seconds turned it off and would not restart with above symptoms.Note with Decompressor pulled in the engine turns ok system only fails under compression

Default NICO's suggestion

"You say the starter spins but not the motor?

I'm going to guess your sprague clutch is all jacked up and the lobes are not twisting open and engaging the flywheel.

Just a guess. Not uncommon for the sprague to poop the bed.

If it is turning the engine over, I'd say you need to look at your tuning situation. Valves and carb in particular. (not much else in the way of a tune, really) "

"Unless the hub is all buggered (doubtful), I'd get only the sprague clutch assembly. The gear should have no issues at all either.

The crank protector can be had at a hardware store for a quarter. Use a copper cap from the plumbing dept.

You might be able to use a regular 3-jaw gear puller to get the magneto off -vs- buying the puller. I got lucky and mine popped right off. Just be careful, as in wear those safety glasses.

You will need the flywheel holder for putting the crank nut back on. DO NOT USE THE CRANK LOCKING BOLT for that, or for removing that nut.

Make sure, if you do buy the extractor, that you are buying the proper size. There was a change in thread size, but I cannot tell you which year this occurred. I only know that I have heard a person or two buy the extractor only to find it didn't fit."
