Default New Member and KTM owner seeking info on the SXC 625

I just bought a used 2004 sxc that seems to be in pretty fair condion. I don't know much about KTM's other than they are orange and torquey

From experience I know with every model there are problem areas that need to be addressed and upgrades that are commonly recommended so I was hoping to get a quick run down on this model from you guys that know alot about this particular bike.

I weigh 250 with out gear so I'm sure I'll probably be wanting some springs shortly so any recommendations for suspension upgrades would definietly be appreciated. I'm mostly interested in trail riding with limited road riding, nothing long distance any way.

I live in the Raleigh NC area and my name is Jeremy by the way.

Hi, and welcome Jeremy.

Your bike should be pretty set up without any mods.

Most guys do get a Akro or FMF exhaust just to open it up breathing
wise.

I weight 205 lbs without gear, and I bought this spring in the 8.4 rate for my
shock.
You might need the 8.8.

Email Jeff the owner, he can recommend what to buy.

Got the bike out to ride a little today and so far very pleased. The rear suspension feels heavy enough for me but I will need some fork springs as I can bottom them pretty easily.

I'm really pleased with the gearing of this bike, great 1st gear and spaced very well to suit on and off road riding although I haven't done any higher speed highway riding but at 55 it seems to cruise well which is about all I care to do as I don't intend to travel very far on the road with this bike.

I probably had the tires over inflate today but it was pretty harsh on the hard packed clay with wash board type bumps. I'll play with the dampining and tire pressures and hopefully that will be improved.

I will need to change fork seals soon and there seems to be a small weeping oil leak around the head, hopefully valve cover and not head gasket. Anyone know of a common leak around this area?

I see your list of bikes, what is the difference between your LC4e and my 04 SXC?

Also curious about how your current bike compared to your XR650R and the 450 exc you had? I had seen a few street legal XR650R's but never did get the opportunity to go look at one.

If this sxc doesn't give any major trouble then I'm sure I'll be really pleased with it. I have had several street bikes over the years and only a few dirt bikes. Had a 93 YZ250 years ago and loved that bike even though I didn't ride a track, just tore across the pastures. Had a 99 XR400R and really liked that bike. Recently had a DR650 and KLR650 but both were far from what I was looking for so sold both shortly after purchasing them. Just picked up the sxc and think that's just what I'm wanting, already has all the parts that the other bikes upgrade to.

Basically both the E model and the SXC are LC4 620cc KTMs.

Your bike came with a high flow head and a Keihin pumper carb, while mine
came with standard a head and a constant velocity Mikuni carb.
The SXC is a bit faster out of the crate, but the E model with the CV carb
is more suited to working a great elevation changes without adjusting
the carb.

The E model also has the dry sump oil system the spin on filter on the bottom
of the steering tube, and a cartridge filter in the engine.
I believe the SXC has two filter, on in a housing behind the cylinder, and one
in the engine.

My XR650r was a fun bike, but was a pain to start when hot or really cold.
I think that out of the crate my 640e with the electric start and upside down
forks, cush hub is a better dual sport, while the XR650r was better for
strictly HIGH speed desert riding.

The 450EXC is totally in a different class and really can't be compared.
