Idle and rpms

Crazy question, 640e has not tach, how do I know what the ideal rpms are during the idle adjustment using the knob. I have it turned it all the way and the bike will not idle without some choke. Loaded question and I am now certain the carb needs cleaning or rebuild.

Thank you

Definitely sounds like a blocked idle jet. Has the bike been sitting a while?
As for a rev counter, You can use a digital timing light on the plug lead, but not everyone has one of them lying around?
