At 55, my new 690 came here last month with one mile on the odometer. Why the 690 for me? Well, having had dual-sport (DS) bikes off and on since I was 13 (then at 15, a new Honda MT125 for $515!), later an XT-500, and in the mid-to-late 90's a KLX650C. Street bikes have always been a main stay for me with some road-racing in my 20's.
Always have had a desire to ride off-road. The WR400F I had for 15 years filled that want for me. The two boys rode with me on their CRF 80's and later 230's, but no longer ride and are off doing their own things in life.
Selection for a large-bore thumper, DS with current technology and good components is very limited, right? So, since '13 I have been eye-balling the 690 Enduro but couldn't mentally get over the prices. The 690 has an attractive service schedule that fits for extended times away from the house. Finally, I told myself "screw it, just go buy one. You are not getting younger!" The double-nickel purchase!
The 690 is very appealing for sure.
Having put over 50k miles on my Concours 14 for nearly the past five years, and having taken it down the Burr Trail, and up the Mokey Dugway in UT, we have passed up some great places to ride too. There is a need for an off-pavement bike again.
These are the prominent reasons for the 690 for me. Yours?
So, 690 will be hauled out west and put to use exploring places and areas I've yet to see.
Mentally, there are no "old" riders. We are drawn to bikes and our own idea of exploring and adventuring on two wheels. Mine will be conservative and just as rewarding.
This 690 being my first KTM, I am counting on the bike making a great impression. If it doesn't leave me stranded on the trail, I will declare success.
