At night, in a dark garage?

The headpipe on a thumper can get red, just near the mounting flange.

Check your spark plug, and make sure it is not ash grey, should be a
tan-reddish.

If not, you might be running lean (not sure if your bike is FI or carb).

I started my 450sx last night in the dark. My head pipe turned red about a foot back from the head. Guess i've got the same problem, If it is a problem. Its an 06. I'm a 2 stroke guy. Seems to me its too lean. Any suggeastions?

Hi Stacy,

That is good first starting point. Hot on a 4 stroke, "usually" means
lean.

Altitude, and other environmental factors can make a
bike run lean, but I try running a little richer as a general rule.
(valves and pistons domes stay cooler and happier).

Not sure what carb you have, but on a Mikuni or Keihin, most folks
drop the c-clip on the main jet, which raises the needle above the
main jet seat. This allows more fuel, or enriches the air fuel mixture.
