Default 07 450exc overheating issues

I recently bought an 07 450exc. This bike is a riot, but it has overheating issues. This week we were riding in Moab - 60 degrees and sunny - negotiating the slickrock and sand required sustained first and second gears. After a short time the bike boils over onto the motor. Steam erups which is a little disconcerting, since we are 30 miles out in the desert. Any solutions for the low speed overheating?

My '03 did that a tight single track, under 15 miles per hour.

2 things:

Engine fan kit (they go for about $100 on ebay).

Engine ice, this raises the boiling point about 70 degrees.

Is your bike jetted on the lean side?

Default 07 450 EXC overheating

Lean jetting is a possibility. I have ordered the JD Jetting for the bike with the expectation that will help. Others have also suggested an "pipe ectomy" - removing the restrictor at the end of the pipe.

The jet kit should help. I don't think exhaust restriction causes overheating.
The 525 and the 425, for that matter are not setup stock for woods riding.
Also think about getting a coolant recovery tank.
Fan kit engine ice work, I know first hand.

Good luck.

Thanks, I will give them a try. The coolant recovery tank is a great idea. Seems odd that KTM would not integrate one into their bikes.

Here is the one I used on my '03. It actually allows you to top of the radiator
also.

I think KTM did not really intend to have the RFS bikes used in woods riding
as much as they did their 2 strokes.
I know in desert, and more open riding red-green-yellow-blue don't touch them.

I've heard of the 525's overheating but not so much with the 450's. My 05 450 exc has perculated twice the past two rides. Never b4 that. Not very hot out yet & I was motoring along at a pretty good clip. Could the cap all of a sudden lose some of it's spring tension? I switched it with the one on my wifes bike (same make/model/year. We'll see this weeken if that is the problem. I also put in new fluid for the first time. Please explain this ice you are talking about & where do you get it.
Thanks
