XCW-400 Clutch Drag
Hi All,
New to KTM and this forum. Just got an 07XCW400 with 15 hrs on it. I find the hydraulic clutch (Magura) drags quite a bit. I spoke with original owner and he says it has been like that since he bought it new in 09.
Did some research already on this and there seems to be many that say that KTM's clutchs drag, others who say they don't. Commonly say you should bleed the clutch since the Mineral oil can congeal or have air in the lines.
I have done the back-bleed with Motorex 75 as specified, still drags.
Any suggestions? I can't see the plates being bad with 15 hrs use, bikes barely broken in.
Thanks a lot guys.

Plates should be ok, but if the bike was ridden hard for just a few hours, the clutch could be bad. Only one way to find out, take the clutch off and see what the plates look like.

Thanks for the info WoodsRiderParts.
I guess I'll likely have no choice but to pull it out, just can't believe a bike of this quality could have that kind of issue so soon. It was a recreational woods bike by an older guy, it's literally immaculate.
I was hoping I was missing something obvious, too bad.

Could be made of gold and diamonds but if the rider abused the clutch, cooked it and glazed the plates there is not much that can be done. Pull them out and clean them up with emery cloth.

In fact my riding buddy smoked his brand new clutch on his 2010 CRF450X
in one day of single track riding. He kept slipping the clutch rather than
changing gears.
Not saying that is the cause, just stating what we witnessed.

When my 525 outlaw gets hot. The clutch will not work and I will have to drive around till my outlaw cools down or i turn the key off and let it cool like that? Any suggestions on whats going on with my clucth. Thanks, outlaw525~

When the motor is hot or your clutch?
If you glaze your plates the they will progressively slip worse.

Fair enough bajadog and Mapleleaf. Just getting to know this machine. Lots of little tweaks to do to it, more a matter of time than anything else! Need to get this drag issue resolved, low end bog at low RPM (could be a dirty carb, or jetting issue) and may do as some have done and get a 12T front sprocket. Likely drive it for a while so I can ensure the bulk of my riding will benefit from the increased snap.
Really nice bike though, really enjoy riding it!
Thanks for the posts guys.

As far as low end bog I would really concentrate on getting the jetting dialed in.
I am guessing you must have an FCR carb. If you can afford it, these kits,
and JD's phone support can really make a big difference.

JD Jet kit was the first mod on my bike and it works flawless on the recommended settings. No bog and great throttle response.
You may want to look into the accelerator pump mod or a leak jet.
Can you describe the conditions surrounding the bog?
Here is a good read for you...
