Default 450 exc dualsport mods

As the bike comes, it i really what we have come to expect of KTM, a racebike, with unbeatable performance, but most agree that riding more than 20 miles or so is a waste of motor hours. Am I right?

The maintenance schedule is kind of intense on these bikes compared to other dual sports, and I was trying to figure out why.
I don't really want to be changing the oil after every day of riding (though it isnt much oil .6l) or adjusting valves and rebuilding the motor. several times per year (assuming I actually dualsport it: commute 40 miles to work, then ride hard all weekend)

In short, I am wondering what are the main wear components, (valves, rings, pistons) and what is causing so much wear so fast? I would like to fix these "problems" and truly use this bike as a daily ride.

Depending on the issues though, different solutions are required, but I am thinking that:
CUSH DRIVER REAR should help the transmission's life on the slab which should in turn help the oil life (less debris in it) which should help everything else.
OIL COOLER should give me more oil capacity and cooler oil duh--so that less frequent changes are needed
RADIATOR FAN keeps things cool because heat is the enemy
LOW COMPRESSION PISTON I know, I can't actually find any of these haha sacrelige! but the KTM has way more power already than the other dualsport choices: wr250r and drz400s and softening up the motor may find some more reliability
LESS AGGRESSIVE CAMS less overlap and less lift for better efficiency and less motor stress??

Maybe I am just dreaming, but this is clearly the superior market choice right now when it comes to woods capable bikes that can do pavement as well. Let me know if you have answers or feedback, thanks.

Great topic.

My take on the KTM being dual sport is mainly to allow you to ride
were non-plated bike are no longer allowed.

I have two bikes, the LC4 which has a 2.25 liter oil capacity, and
yes the cush hub (lower compression ratio too) for "true dual sporting".

I can run that bike at steady state freeway speeds (~66 - 70 mph)
all day.
It's not a real great off road bike in the single track sense though.

That's where my Berg excels.

Just my two cents.

Here are some things I have found:

Some good info in there^^ or at least hope.
Sounds like the oil cooler will drop temps of a CRF450 on a SM track from 260* down to 210*, which is promising.

Oh look, KTM conveniently offers an oil cooler now, cool.!
EDIT: the oil cooler is for a superduke...still looking for a good oil cooler!
Found this http://blaisracingservices.com/KTM/K.../prod_676.html
but it looks pretty easy to crush.......
and this http://www.twinair.com/worldwide/twin-air-oil-cooler

http://www.radmfg.com/Cush-Series-RE...radh-eq-1r.htm
and here ^^ is what looks like a good source for a cush drive rear.
$500 sounds fair, now I gotta learn to lace a motorcycle wheel!

It sounds like these bikes will have LOTS more longevity with a looser maintenance schedule with an oil cooler and a cush drive rear.

It's weird. You can see people are viewing posts, but no one
is posting (except a few regulars). Just a lot of lurking going on
here.
