Default 500 EXC a dualsport? Really? Really?

My kids are grown and its time to get back into motorcycling after a 20-year absence. I want to do dual-sport riding on the two-lane roads, fire roads, and single-track of Northern California that might last a few hours, or a day, or a couple of days.

Thought the 500 EXC was going to be the perfect bike since I wanted fuel injection. Then I read on another thread that the service interval for oil changes is 15 hours?? So if I'm on a 3-day tour riding 10 hours a day I'm supposed to do an oil change mid-day on the second day?

Have I mistakenly put down a deposit on a great race bike that can legally get from one off-road area to another but isn't really a dual-sport?

For what I'm describing, should I be getting a BMW G650GS instead?

I sincerely appreciate any input.

Hate to agree with you, but
I'd get the 690 enduro R model.

I been there done that with the kids gone, my
640e is for dual sporting, and my Berg for
fun technical stuff.

BMW dual sport

I live in Las Vegas so that dictates my type of riding. I find dual sports don't do anything very well. At least the KLR I used to own didn't. There's not much in between type riding here in LV so I have offroad/motocrossers for the desert and a Harley for the street and don't try to mix the two. I think the 500 you're looking at leans heavily towards offroad and will only be a six pack transporter for the street.

Default what do others think of the 690 Enduro R instead?

About 100 pounds heavier, I think. But an oil change interval of 7500 km instead of 15 hours. And still fuel-injected. And still a KTM.

Your thoughts?
