Need opinions on bikes pros and cons - switching from quads
Ive ridden dirt bikes with friends, 450 4 stroke honda crf's and yzf yamaha's
One of my favorite i ridden was a crf250R with a 280 kit and enduro engineering revalved forks and i cant rem if they did the rer shock also or if it was aftermarket.
I was into crotch rockets for several years, had supper modded 06 R6 for the twisties and had most 1 liter bikes over the years, I have ridden very few KTM's but after looking at friends i always said if I got a dirt bike it would be a KTM, ive ridden a 200cc 2 stroke a friend loaned me for the day,
I am a very good quad rider at XC, I skipped last year but i raced in GNCC, and almost every regional hare scramble in the south east, At Steele creek from B class i finished in top 20 one time, it was a mud race and i didnt get hung up so i got to pass lots of people hung up in places, i finished in front of lots of pros, I usually ride A class and finish top 3, some classes i race pro depending on their class structure and im top 5, if im not something broke or several GNCC pros are there practicing.
Anyways I love my street bikes and want to go 2 on the dirt also.
I plan to get a used bike first, then see what I exactly want and find one in good shape a year or two old and buy one already modded with alot of the stuff i would want to save the cash of how much u loose rolling it off dealers lot, i usually buy a racers bike that ha a few races on it, and get a really nice bike for a
bout the price of a new bike,
i ride 2 stroke and 4 stroke quads, It s hard to say which i like better,
but heres what I am looking at
250XC
250XC-W
250XC-F
I understand the 250Xc-F is the 4 stroke, I dont understand the differene between the 250Xc and XC-W.
I totally understand the 250cc 2 stroke will have more power than the 4,
but that 250 4 stroke honda with the 280 kit was my favorite ive ridden for extended period of time, I have not ridden a ktm for an extended period of time. So i dont mind modding the 250 4 stroke, but I am definitely a fan of the 2 stroke also, The maintenance of either is not a problem, I have raced these new 4 strokes since 04 so i know about the maint. on them I also have 2 2 stroke quads so i know about the maint on them, neither bothers me.
I am also asking what is a god used year of a 250Xc and a 250XCf,
for example,I mean there is usually a year with a better cam or better ported head or better susp. Every brnd ive ever known is this way,
Also what should i expect to spend for a good bike, I dont want something worn out I want a nice bike, for example I hate to keep referencing honda but the crf250R 07-10 i think is one of the best, for example the 07 is way better than the ones before, So im looking for tips like this on the KTMs

Howdy, welcome!
So... interesting story ya got! Glad to hear you'll be stepping away from quads, sadly you'll find a lot dirt bike guys HATE quad's, just an FYI.
I have a few questions before we get into the details of the nitty gritty,
- How much do you weigh
- What kind of riding are you going to do
- Do you plan on racing or just having fun

Ive already experienced most dirt bike guys hate quads but i ride with dirt bike guys so I am an exception, I take care of my trails and dont think my quad is a mini tractor, I have the mind set of a dirt bike guy.
I dont defend 90 percent of quad riders, I just grew up on them.
ok I am 6 ft 1.5 in no shoes, i weigh about 220 in riding gear i would say, I will ride Xc, but I do hit the jumps if they are there and i may play on a mx track.
I dont know about race. This first bike probably not, but the guys i ride with is race speed when riding, its make a loop os 10-15 miles then check your stuff to warm up then make 2 more usually not stopping unless a problem after first stop.
If I go to race I would upgrade more than likely b/c I have had a pit bike my sponsors bought me for getting around at nationals etc, so this will be my first real dirt bike, had plenty of road bikes, so I hope that answers your question,
unless i got a bike that just needed modded for racing then i would upgrade.
I know its more rider than bike or quad but i am saying i dont want to go buy a new or new priced bike and end up liking my quads better is all

Kool beans,
So the XC is more like an MX bike, bit with slightly different suspension, but using a similar close ratio transmission. The XC-W is an enduro bike, the W stands for "wide" gearbox ratio's. It also has a larger stator assembly for running lights and some other more minor differences.
So if you're doing pure enduro stuff, you might wanna pick up the W.
In terms of which bike to buy, I think you would be pleasantly surprised with a 250 or 300 2 stroke version. KTM made lots of different enduro based bikes, some with electric start, some 4 stroke, lots of different CC's, its all over the map. But if I were to narrow it down to 1 or 2 bikes, the 250 and 300 are the way I'd roll for your weight and terrain type.

I would agree with you stock to stock if OI was getting a stock 4 stroke i d get a 250, to me a little more power than i need is better than less,
I got a friend who is a rep for MTA, they sell to shops and dealerships,
ITP is one of their big accounts think of them as a smaller parts unlimited i would say would be a fair analogy.
But ive ridden several 450's I even got to ride a factory Kawasaki MX and SX bike and a Fully built pro circuit, those kawi's talk about something thst wanted to rev and move and the yz250 pro circuit wasnt as built as those but it was a fullt built bike from top to bottom, just typing i can still rem the sound those kawi factory SX bikes made,
I had planned on if I went 4 stroke 250XC-f going with a 280 kit, Out of the bikes ive ridden the power to weight ratio in on 250 4 stroke witj n built 280 engine in it, is great, they have enough power fro someone my size and they are light,
I dont know the weight diff, between it and the 250xc-f, with the added info would if change your suggestion. Honestly id like to have both as I am an avid fan of the 2 stroke and want to keep it alive as long as possible and i commend KTM on making them still, and supporting them.
Honestly if I get the bike and all the quads go, well I would keep 1 or 2, I
have an 1988 trx250R all stock that looks brand new, I would have to be in a hard situation to even consider selling it.

On my quads I really prefered tgev2 stroke, cheap to maintain, ESP on top end etc,
So
The ktm 250 xc-w the endure one with the wider trans,
But I am considering the 250 xc 4 stroke, is it a woods bike or more mx bike also.
Anyways I know this is a ktm forum butvi gotba friend between himmand his dad has a stable of dirt n street bikes
He had an 07 ctf250r which I know is an mx bike from factory,
He did a 280 Athena kit, he had endure engineering dobthe rear shock and front forks, he had converted it to an xc bike,
I am sure there were still reminisces from the mx bike but it had so much power etc than the x
And a can't remember the last time inhadcan off road bikevwith a headlight, last bike I had with a headlight was an r6 and r1 yamaha sport bikes.
So I'm looking for some help on which bikes to look at
And also I know in lots of other bikes etc certain yearscare better than others,
Itvis usually not leaps n bounds but when buying I want to get the best for my money.
I really want to find a stock ish bike so it's not ragged out raced out
But plan on modding it to fit me and usually other people's mods isnt what I want.
So for a great ktm woods bike I gotbthe 250xc-w on my list and is thec250 xc a woods bike?
And which years are good ones to look for for a reasonable price
I need your guys help

I sadly don't have much experience with anything but motocross bikes, which in the world of KTM are quite different then the offroad counterparts. In the motocross arena 07+ is where you wanna be. I think the XC shared the same updates in 07 as the SX, but as for the other machine's, not quite sure.
