Default ktm 690 E/R/SMC section ?

Hi guys ,newbie here ,been looking around for information and general tips and stuff on a ktm 690 ,myself and lots of others are looking for a forum that does just that ,the adv rider thread is so big and is useless to find older information for guys that have recently bought one or are looking at getting one .
I thought this would be the ideal place to start one .it would need subtopics like engine ,frame, electrics and general info etc.

This is just a suggestions but myself and loads of others would be here constantly adding and looking for information

Cheers

Lightbulb The 690 motor needs to be uncorked

Yeah, I know what you mean. I bought a 690 Enduro R in June. It didn't feel like 62 horses when I rode it home for the first time. It's been kinda hard finding info and hop up stuff.

I got some major power gains by swapping out the exhaust for a full FMF system, and fiddling with the intake.

The pipe's pretty self explanatory.

The intake consisted of installing a K&N air filter and replacing the air intake snorkel. The stock intake snorkel is very restrictive.

This is the KTM power part that replaces the snorkel:

Part # 76506102000 It's around thirty Bucks.

Set the power switch under the seat to #2 and the bike is now a rocket!

I wouldn't be surprised if I gained at least ten horses with the pipe and intake mods.

I've found goodies at:
  1. www.ktmcyclehutt.com
  2. www.ktm-parts.com
  3. www.ktmtwins.com

I wish I could get a set of 17" Marchesinis for it.

I'm with you on that. I to want just a 690 topic thread...I've had my 690E for 2 months and loving it. However, I've also had to search the net for the mod's, tweaks and stuff.

I've found a lot, but think that it all should be in one place.

- for instance:

Speedo mod to correct the tyre diameter and reprogram the wheel length (as I have motard wheels as well as enduro...yeah, lucky me)

MY speedo crapped out (common issue) but bless KTM...they replaced it with the very latest model so as to get away from the fogging and faulty LCD

I've installed Rox anti vibe risers so I can confirm that 2" risers can be down with almost no tweaking of cables etc.

If we just use this one thread, we will get what we want...and in time the Admin will likely create one due to 'proven' need.

I still have original exhaust but the intake has the KTM foam filter, and the airbox has been 'swiss cheesed'...it haul *** now.

I may change the muffler and get rid of it because of the weight and nuclear heat BUT I actually like the stealthy quiet of it...as if you are going to speed along, I really don't want attention.

Hello,
I'm new to the forums and mainly the KTM 690. I have an 08 690 Enduro and would like to know if the FMF Q4 full exhaust for an 09 690 SMC will fit my bike? Any know the correct answer? Also, will this exhaust require my bike to be re mapped or the air intake and filter changed? Thanks

I too would like to know if I will need to remap after air box and air filter mods. I don't have the cash for an exhaust but I could to the air box no problem. Cheers.

I recently removed my full Akrapovich Titanium exhaust system from my 690 SMC and frankly; I barely noticed any loss of power.
Almost all the power gains for these bikes are in opening up the inlet and remapping to suit.

A few years ago I worked at a KTM dealer and bought a 640SM off them. I also had a Yamaha XJR1300. We never had my 640 on the dyno but the XJR was modfied on the dyno. The std XJR (2003 model) had about 95HP at the rear wheel and around 75 ft/lb of torque.
The fix was much the same as the KTM 690's: open up the inlet side and rejet to suit. We drilled an extra hole in the airbox (on the other side and about half the diametr of the std inlet) allowing around 30%+ more flow and we added bellmouths to the inlets. The std rubber manifolds on this model were tapered down and in fact did not match the head ports. This is how Yamaha met Euro standards for 100HP limits. We replaced these manifolds with 2nd hand units from an FJ1200 which went straight on and matched the carn and head perfectly. After rejetting we had 126HP and 89 ft/lbs at the rear wheel at a cost of about $200 plus dyno time (nothing for me as I was the acting service manager).
Lastly I added a Staintune Stainless muffler with a bigger bore. We dynoed the machine again and found the muffler added 1HP only at the top and about 3HP mid range. Obviously mufflers/exhausts are seriously over-rated as providers of extra horsepower and I'd suggest anyone looking for more start with the inlet side.
