Default ktm 85 xc vs. 85 sx

I know that the (2009 - last year it was made) xc had slighter softer suspension valving than the SX and also had a kickstand. Beyond that, does anyone know if there are any differences in the engine - a heavier flywheel, a different power valve set up?

I'm looking at getting an 85 for my 10 year old son as his next trail bike. I'm just wondering how different the XC is from the SX, or for that matter if a 2011 SX has enough changes to make it noticeably better than the '09 bikes.

It half helps. What's for sure is the XC has a higher seat height, the kick stand and an o-ring chain. The specs on the KTM link show the SX as weighing 2 kg more and having a smaller rear sprocket: I'd bet for sure that they've got that backwards. The XC surely is geared lower and weighs more. Extra dry weight due to side stand, maybe a steel rear sprocket??, and maybe, just maybe a flywheel.

One dealer I talked to said nope, the engines are the same but 2 kg is a big difference and why wouldn't they fit a flywheel to make the bike more trail friendly...is that some of the extra weight? Still, it's guess work on my part - no one seems to really know.

Maybe we should just settle for a Kawasaki 85 and do the aftermarket kickstand and then all the other trail stuff like FWW, skid plate, bark busters etc. is all the same. The Kawi's aren't that bad .

...er, that would be a bigger rear sprocket on the SX, per it's specs. Which is probably wrong. It makes sense that they'd gear the XC down b y 2 or 3 teeth on the rear so they've likely got that spec flipped around between the bikes.

I'm probably overthinking this..........
