Thumbs up Hi

Hi everyone, my name is Phil I'm a new member. I live in Nort East Leehigh Acres Florida (part of east Ft. Myers), I just picked up a nice 2001 KTM MX 250 (I think its an MX because theres an "MX" in the vin numbers??), I ride mainly fast open areas in south west florida, some woods (but not very tight trails), lots of sand and wide open areas, is this a good bike for my kind of riding? I hear it was a very fast hard hitting bike in 2001.....

Also I want to change the gearbox oil, I can't find Motorex oil anywhere where I live (theres no KTM dealers near me) can you guys recomend a different brand oil I can buy locally for the gearbox/engine?? The guy I bought it from said he was running Repsol Moto 2T competition pre mix 2-stroke oil mixed with super unleaded at a 50 to one ratio, it seems a bit rich...I'm not a very fast rider and just trail ride mostly so I'm def. not WFO most of the time is it safe to pre mix at 40-1 or 45-1?? Do you recomend a different pre mix oil?? It also has a NGK B8EG spark plug, should I be running a diff plug?? Thanks for any help advice...

Phil

Welcome!

I think you must have a 250 MXC, and the did not make 250 MX after 1992.

Post a photo, and I can give you a definite model.

Here is what I run in my sons' two stroke KTM 144 transmission

I run this oil in my son's bike also, but at 32:1

Go onto the Rockymountainatv website and call them before you
go to 32:1 ratio.

Thanks Bajadog, so thats a straight 30 weight synthetic oil?? Can you buy that locally at an auto parts store or some place like Pep Boys or Wallmart?? Will a different brand work as long as its a high quality 30 weight oil (synthetic or reg.??) Isnt 32/1 too rich?? Too much oil, I used to run Golden Spectro 40/1 or 50/1

I would never run cheap premix oil in my two strokes. For $4 or $5 more you can run synthetic, your rings and lower end will live a LOT longer. Just my two cents.

My son runs 32:1 because the races. I'd try changing your ratio a little a bit
at a time, and check you plug after changing your ratio. Maybe try increasing the mix from 40 to 45 to :1 first.

Transmission oil could be high quality synthetic, I'd just be careful the DON"T contain friction modifiers, as you will start getting clutch slip.

Good luck, and post your results.
