There are a bunch of differences. I'm surprised the salesman didn't know.

The Duke is more of a purpose built streetfighter design. Lower, more powerful engine, and will feel more street bike oriented.

The SMC is a direct descendant of the Enduro. A few tweaks have been made to the suspension but it's a long travel, tall seat height enduro with 17" street wheels and rubber installed.

As for which one would be a better performer, that's for another thread.

Barman,the salsmen should have been selling hairdryers!! anyhow the bike I was intrested in was a 690 duke,not a 690 DukeR,according to the spec sheet the R has alonger stroke and higher comp....the duke is a 2010,and bore/stroke is102mm/80mm(654cc)and comp. is11.8:1...whereas the r model is a true 690cc motor,do they make 2 690 Duke's

The "true" 690 engine displacement and compression ratio is due solely to the longer stroke on the R model. Yes there are two duke's and the R model would be the one to consider. You'll spend a bunch of money on the base model trying to match the performance and components of the R.
