Default New to KTM - Arizona

Hello:
I'm new to the formum and to KTMs. I have a couple of KLR650 and have been riding for a long time. Bitten by the dirt bug here in Arizona I just bought a 2006 525 XC with a bad front brake. I looked up the problem here, but can't find anything specific or recent. The last (unanswered ) post was from HJake in Aug 2007.

I have nothing up front and took apart the hand brake cylinder, cleaned it and blew it dry with air. The plunger looks good as do all the parts, but nada. It's not pumping and there is little or no resistance. I'm thinking that the little white plastic disk with the holes in it inside the reservoir isn't letting fluid into the system. donno. This part is not listed on the OEM diagram. Any idea how to get a new one or am I looking at the wrong issue here?

Also
Right on the lid it says to use DOT 4, but the manual sez 5.1 only. What's the right brake fluid?

Hi and welcome.

How does the o-ring on #10 look?

Also how does the brake caliper look?

DOT 4 and DOT 5.1 are compatible with each other.

I use 5.1 because that's what cycle gear sells.

DOT 5.0 is the one you can NEVER use (silicone based).

Thanks for the reply and I'm looking forward to being a member of this forum an joining the pumpkin patch.

How does the o-ring on #10 look?

All the rubber looks good and the plunger seals ("O rings") seal against air pressure.

Also how does the brake caliper look?

Caliper looks good.

DOT 4 and DOT 5.1 are compatible with each other.

Thanks for that. Further research says that the difference is in temperature tolerance.

I use 5.1 because that's what cycle gear sells.

Have some on the way. Thought I'd get it working and flush with 3 and fill up with 5.1.

DOT 5.0 is the one you can NEVER use (silicone based).

I wonder who ever thought it was cool to name a completely different fluid 5.1 and not 7 or 10.1. Confusing.

I'm still wondering what that little disk does. It's like the one you find in the kitchen faucet. I cleaned it with air and it seems at least clean. Is there an orientation of the holes in the disk and the ones below in the reservoir body?

I'm getting ready to order a new plunger kit (10), but want to exhaust other possibilities first. I also want to ride this thing because it goes like a scaled cat, but stops like the national debt.
