Default SMC offroad?

hey guys,

I'm looking for my first bike. initially, I thought I wanted a BMW F800GS, but have since decided I'd like a lighter and probably smaller bike for my first.

I DO want to maintain at least some of the Dual Sport and luggage capability of the GS, but I also have realized that there is NO WAY i'm going to ride enough off road to make that a point of heavy compromise.

So, if I want to do some easy desert riding, dirt roads, and some dry lake beds, I figure an SMC with the right times and tires, luggage, a touring shield and an enduro tank should give me what I need.

The only question is whether or not it is feasible to get an SMC and a second set of 50/50 or real knobbies on a spoked rim?

Thanks in advance, I'm really trying to sort all this out, and it SUCKS that I can't get myself on the bikes for a test ride. Makes it REALLY hard not to just get a Ducati or BMW since I can at least ride them!

I have a SMC now and would like to do some off-roading again myself, not having much luck on tires and havent started on rims yet if need be!

I found it's difficult to find a proper 19/17 wheel combo to replace the stock wheel on my 2006 640 LC4 SMC. So I'm planning to buy 150/70-17 Continental TKC 80 for the rear and 120/90-17 Bridgestone TW42 for the front. These tires would be fitted onto the stock SMC wheels.

I'll let you know how this setup does once i get enough time riding on them.
