Sprockets on 990s

Hi, I want to gear down my 990 SMT. Standard is 17:41, so I'm thinking of about a 45 - 48T rear but want to stay with the original chain. Two questions:

1. the bike is new, so how much bigger can I go without running out of chain adjustment? What's the rule of thumb, 1 tooth gives how much wheel travel? I'd hate to get a new sprocket and then find I need a longer chain too.

2. which ones will fit? Will any SM or SD sprocket fit?

G'day mate if you want to gear it down you should look to a smaller front sprocket. 1 tooth off the front is equal to four on the back. Say a 16 tooth front & see what ya reckon.
Also because your front will be smaller if you really want you could add on the rear later.
