Default Thinking about a change

I have a 2003 525 EXC 4 stroke. My first KTM was a 300 EXC 2 stroke.

I like riding my 525 on the streets a little bit. Primarily on county and side roads. I rode my first street supermoto, a Suzuki DR400 last summer. I decided I don't want to pursue street bike riding seriously.

However I like the ground clearance you have on a supermoto compared to my EXC.

I mostly trail ride through Moab and Colorado in the summer. My bike sits in the garage during winter.

Could I take a Supermoto bike and put somewhat aggresive tires on them that would work good in the dirt and use it primarily as a dirt bike? I wouldn't want knobby tires, but something that would work good in the dirt. I don't believe you need to have knobby tires to do well where I ride.

I wonder how the performance would be with the smaller diameter wheels and tires.

Thoughts?

Hey Paul,

Just to clarify.

Are you saying that a supermotard bike with 17" wheels has MORE ground
clearance than an EXC with 21" X 18" wheels?

Or do you mean seat height?

Anyways, there are 17" off road tires out there, but they are more $$ than
standard 21" X 18" tires.

Check out rockymountainatv.com

Your top end speed will be reduced with smaller diameter tires also.

CORRECTION. Seat height is what I am referring to. Not ground clearance.

I like that I can plant both feet on the ground riding when I ride the Supermoto bike. I suppose I could lower the height of my bike a bit by shaving the seat and lowering the rear shock a bit.

I guess that's the one issue with the KTM link-less PDS suspension, you
can't get a lowering link.
