help with rear axle

i bought a used 2000 300 MXC and I would like to put a new back tire on. I am sure the tire was changed once or twice with the previous owner. Break pads are fairly new. I am hitting the rear axle with a rubber mallet and nothing. Also, I hit it with a 2X4 and nothing. I think i need to buy anti-freeze up or something. Just not sure where to spray it.

Two things:

Get some penetrating oil (chain lube works too) and
spray it round where item #41 is so that it wicks down
#40. Also on the opposite side near #39.
Let it sit REALLY soaked over night. Then
put #44 back on about 3 turns and tap with
a mallet.

Once you get the rear wheel off, make sure you
put anti-seize on the 42 & 43 so the don't lock
up in your swing arm.
