Default cdi ?

does anyone know where to get a cdi box for a 96 ktm 250 exc. I'm also having problems getting a 2000 ktm 125 sx to fire if anyone knows how I could fix it?

As I recall that is the SEM ignition and they are not known for their reliability. You should be able to upgrade to the newer (kokusan) setup but you would need the stator, flywheel, and CDI box. Does your setup look like the picture below?

Now the 125 could be a lot of things but start with the free stuff. Pull the fuel tank off and remove the coil. Clean the coil mounting posts, ground wire, and the coil posts. Pull all your wiring harness connectors apart and inspect for damage. Check the spark plug boot. They screw into the wire and often get corroded. You can pull the boot off cut the wire back and twist it back in for a good connection. Also, you can disconnect the kill switch, they can ground out the CDI. Check those things first.

I fought a hard to start problem on my 02 300 forever. Darn thing would not kick start no matter what but if I bumpstarted it would fire right up and run like normal. I changed everything-coil,plug,fuel,fuel filter, stator, even a new top end. Just to finally find out it was the CDI. Those things are very hard to diagnose because there are little to no checks you can do on the bike or even on the bench to check a CDI. Heck even the dealership wont test it, they just install a new one and see if it works.

FWIW- what I found after finally realizing my CDI was to blame was that my steering stops were allowing my triple clamps to squish my CDI. Im fairly certain this is why it failed. Worth taking a look at.

I relocated my CDI to the air box. The wires are not long enough so I spliced in some wire to extend the harness. The triple clamp stops should keep the CDI safe in the stock location unless the are adjusted in.

100% agreed. Unfortunately I bought the bike used and had no idea the stops had been moved/adjusted until it was to late

BTW-Joe, What prompted the move to the airbox?

One of the bolts holding the CDI to the frame twisted in half. I ran a race or two with just one bolt holding the CDI on the frame and it was bugging me real bad. I found myself stressing about that CDI coming off during a race so I moved it. It fit real nice in the air box battery tray.
