1290 sa s

I am a long time BMW owner. My current, 15 year old, BMW 1150GS is no longer exciting for me to ride. I am considering converting to a KTM 1290 Super Adventure S. I have heard, mostly from BMW owners, that the KTM 1290 motor generates a good deal of heat, making it uncomfortable for the rider. Since I live in the southern US, this is an important issue for me. Can any KTM owner's comment on the heat issue?

Thanks, Adam

If you're off-roading, you'd probably notice more heat than when road riding due to the lower overall speeds (and air flow). Many claim the catalytic converter box is the source of excess heat some have noted.

OK thanks. I ride 90 percent on pavement and 10 percent on dirt fire roads. Some heat is understandable given the size and placement of the motor. Since posting, I have read in other places that the heat does seem to be a complaint. I just don't want the heat to be a distraction or uncomfortable. In one post I read, the person said that even the fuel in their tank got abnormally hot. I am just wondering if this is the norm.

KTM fixed that problem with the heat with exhaust rap and heat sheild under the seat but your still get some coming up after all its a big motor. If it is S with the cast rims I wouldn't be taking it on dirt not really what it's made for I've seen rims with flat spots after hitting pot holes

Thanks

It is good to know they have the heat issue worked out. The videos I have viewed on You Tube have been overwhelmingly positive and exciting. The old Beemer is getting just a little too boring. At 61 years old, I have only a few years of excitement left in me I am looking to buying a 1290 SA in a few months time. My dilemma is should I wait for the 2020 model to come out.

Thank you

Thank you. That is good information. I have not yet ridden the new 1250. I am a member of the BMW Motorcycle Club of Chattanooga. No one in our group has yet purchased the new bike. I will be going to the BMW Motorcycle Owners Club rally in Lebanon, TN this June. Maybe I can do a demo ride there. I have not yet ridden the KTM either. All of my research has been on line. The local KTM and BMW dealers do not have demo bikes. They will let you take a short ride around the block if you are serious about purchasing. This makes it hard to choose a bike. There is just something about the KTM that excites me. I can't wait to ride one. Either bike will be an improvement over my 15 year old BMW 1150 GS. I have no traction control or ride modes or anything like that - only rudimentary ABS.

Brissy 1290, have you had any trouble with wind buffeting your helmet with the stock 1290 windshield?
