Opinions Please

Will be picking up a new bike soon, it's between the Duke 790 and a leftover MT09. The Duke seems to be better equipped, but the Yamaha is about $4500 cheaper. Is the Duke worth the extra bucks? I generally keep it under 100, anyway, and $4500 can fix a lot deficiencies. What do you think?

I've ridden the mt09 at Donington GP and my 690 was better than it. Let alone the 790

It's a good bike though and $4500 is a chunk of change I admit.

Thanks for the reply, I had a 690 and it was a blast, especially the light weight, just wondering if the mt would be as good on the street, it will never see a track.

Cool Had one

Had a 14 Fz09 when they first came out, liked it a lot, but to fix the suspention and the snatchey throttle in "A" mode made me get another bike-traded on a Versy 1000 and been wanting a 690 Duke for a while so when wife said she was done ridding period sold the Fjr and my Dr650 and got a 18 690 Duke, I got it late Nov and have put almost 300 miles on in 40-50 deg weather, Love it and cant wait till nicer weather, Test drive them both if you can, the 3 cly engine is nice but the gobs of torque is just awesome plus the bike is georgess, Hope that helps , sorry for the long reply...

I rode a demo model a few days ago and was so impressed that I pick up a new one in 3 days. You can read my impressions here: https://geoffjames.blogspot.com/2019...rs-go-bad.html . I ride a GSX-S1000 and was looking for something lighter but something that had a strong emotional appeal. The Gixxer is a good bike but I never had a strong emotional connection with it.

The only way to find that out is to ride one - good luck!

This may not be a popular opinion, here, but I would take the FZ 09 at $ 4500 less.

I have both bikes, and a " few " others.

The leftover MT 09 sounds like it would be newer than the 2014, so the twitchy throttle may have been resolved by now.

There are ECU flashes available to smooth the throttle and de-restrict bike.

Suspension fix could be as simple as heavier forks springs , 10 wt fork oil,
and a good aftermarket shock. I went a bit further.

I don't know about the weight of the later MT 09, but my 2014 was 417 Lbs,
which is pretty close to the weight of the KTM 790 with a lot more power.
The FZ / MT 09 is definitely not lacking for bottom end torque.

Thanks for the info, my math was wrong, forgot the tax on the mt, but its still $3500 cheaper. I figure I can get a shock and tune for under 1K, so that's probably the way I'll go. But seeing seeing that picture of your orange duke makes the decision tougher. Beautiful bike.

I test rode the 09 and the 790 and the KTM just fit my riding style and the roads I frequent the most better for me. Either bike would be fine and at $3,500 difference I can see the case for the Yamaha. That being said I just felt more in tune with the Duke. It just was more in contact with the pavement and I could feel where the front wheel was and what it was doing. It was very confidence inspiring for me. I would say just go with what ever feels a better fit both physically and financially. Both are good bike.
