Hi everyone, i recently bought a 2008 690 SMC as my first motorcycle and i just love it.

However im having some issues everytime im starting it up.
Whether it's hot or cold, it takes 3-5 times of pressing the starter until it successfully starts up. No exceptions!

The previous owner had issues getting it to start a couple of years ago, so he took it to the shop and they switched some parts out to the auto-decompression system which rendered the issue back then.

Then this happened a year or so later, any insight of what could be the issue?

Edit: Updated vid of the issue

that problem wasnt discussed much on this forum as with other forums.
fix is the spring..

when motor not on the spring(9) holds the weight in(8) which adds the bump(6) to the cam for decomp.
when motor is starting the revolutions still not fast enough to swing the weight(8) out.
when started the weight swings out the bump rod(6) and the weight(8) locks.

when the motor is stopped the spring is supposed to bring the weight back to starting point.
yours doesnt so its sitting with weight out and spring loaded

flicking the starter button can jolt the parts and the weight returns to starting position

Thanks alot! so you believe it's the auto-decomp system which is failing again? even though it was inspected and sorted 2 years ago?

it depends, if when you push the starter button and you can hear and know that the starter ground to a stop from engine load, then its the decomp.

if its clicky, maybe another problem.
but you can tell when the starter gets loaded and cant spin.

you can also see by parts list that they never introduced upgraded decomp parts so it can happen over and over again for the same reason it happens from the factory.

those 3 components need to operate smoothly together so the weight and bump stick doesnt stay in open position.
its very posible that theres a sticky part which creates the load problem, so it might not be the spring but if you go in , put a new spring in.

in anycase , you can prolly do this one in your shed if youve ever did minor mech work before.
the key is to look at those components when the weight and bump stick is fully open and loaded with force from the weight, your looking for a sticky part or retarded spring operation or both.

Alright sounds good, im actually waiting for a shipment of oil and filters arriving in the next few days.

Oil hasnt been changed since august 2016 but the bike hasnt had alot of miles after that. could also record a vid next time im starting up to see if you still have the same impression of it.

Well apparantly i cant post any links yet, so if you search "2008 KTM 690 SMC Starting issue" on youtube you'll find the upload of the startup.

Gonna do the engine flush and change the oil tomorrow to see if that remedies anything.

Update:

After having the bike stored for 12 days without driving i took it for a spin yesterday.

Fired up instantly after pressing the starter just once.

But then i parked it for a couple of hours and started it up again it was back to the normal 3-4 presses of the starter.

The issue seems to get better by the day, lately it has been starting right away without any issues. Only differences i could think off is an oil and filter change and switching to a higher octane fuel (98RON)

Hm ok, issue still hasnt dissapeared. If the bike rests for a couple of days or more it always start up on the first try, otherwise it's the same problem.

But now however, a new issue has occured.

Whenever im accelerating hard for instance when overtaking i get engine hesitation around 4-6k RPM then bumps up to 8k suddenly like it's in neutral or something.

Not sure about the word you call it in english, what do you think may cause this? air filter has been cleaned recently and also changed the plug.

It was recently serviced at a KTM Dealer to assess the issue with hard starting the bike, they could not figure it out, and when i recieved it the clutch started to slip from 4th to 6th gear when going hard on the throttle.

Could be a coincidence, but now im pretty sceptical about letting the bike get serviced by others then myself.
