2014 KTM 1190R ODB-2 Diagnostic Port TuneECU

I am hoping to find individuals who have tried to access the OBD-2 diagnostic port on the 2014 KTM 1190R.

From what I have been able to glean from the various model wiring diagrams, KTM has evolved from a simple K Line bus on the 990, to a system using both the K Line and CAN-H, CAN-L on the 1190Rc8r, and now using only the CAN-H, CAN-L lines for the 1190 Adventure. Dropping the K Line means the adapter recommended for KTM on the TuneECU and LonElec web pages will no longer work for the 1190 Adventure. I contacted LonElec, and they indicated they were aware of the new wiring, but were waiting for a demand from TuneECU users before producing the proper adapter. Any experience with this out there in KTM-Land?

For what it is worth, my preliminary understanding of the Diagnostic port wiring and mapping to the OBD-2 system is that the KTM pins are:

990 Adventure:
1 (orange) maps to OBD-2 16 +12V
4 (light blue) maps to OBD-2 7 K Line
6 (brown) maps to OBD-2 4 ground

The 1190Rc8r uses the same configuration for pins 1, 4, and 6, and adds pins 2 and 3 for the CAN protocol:
1 (orange) maps to OBD-2 16 +12V
2 (black/blue) maps to OBD-2 6 CAN-H
3 (white/blue) maps to OBD-2 14 CAN-L
4 (light blue) maps to OBD-2 7 K-Line
5 blank
6 (brown) maps to OBD-2 4 ground

On the 1190 Adventure, the color of the pin 1 wire has changed, and pin 4 is now blank. This is my best guess (no warranty expressed or implied):
1 (green/red) maps to OBD-2 16 +12V
2 (black/blue) maps to OBD-2 6 CAN-H
3 (white/blue) maps to OBD-2 14 CAN-L
4 blank
5 blank
6 (brown) maps to OBD-2 4 ground

So the old 3-wire OBD-2 adapter would still work on the 1190Rc8r to read the K Line, but will connect to a blank wire-4 on the 1190R Adventure.

Let me know if anyone out there successfully makes an adapter, and accessed the OBD-2 port.

CAN sniffing

Hi bike51,

i have recently connected my CAN analyzer tool to Ktm diagnostic connector , and i have sniffed all CAN packets trasmitted by ECU , Abs Bosch module etc ...

i have also tried to send into CAN network some standard OBD2 CAN frame messages through standard PID for read engine data in real time.
but nothing the the ECU reply with standard error ( functionality not supported ) , so it seem that standard OBD2 defined by standard SAE J1979 is not supported.

so i think , but it is only my supposition that Ktm Diagnostic protocol , it is the same used generally for Kline , but now trasmitted over CAN.

i don't know tuneecu software and related Kline to Usb adapter , but i suppose that Ktm adventure 1190 will be compatible with tuneecu , only when software engineers will undestand how to translate ktm diagnostic protocol from kline to canbus.

so the correct wire connection is the same that you have descibed :
2 (black/blue) maps to OBD-2 6 CAN-H
3 (white/blue) maps to OBD-2 14 CAN-L

so in my supposition normal vag-com KKl adapter tipically used with tune ecu is not correct for our bike , probably we need equivalent vag-com K + CAN adapter.

Thank you for your feedback.

I believe the KTM diagnostic equipment is made by AVL DiTest of Austria. I thought I found a US dealer quoting a price on the equipment (can not find the link now - seem to remember it was ~$2000 US). So I guess we may have to wait until more folks at TUNEECU play with the new 1190Adventure.

Hi Bick51,

i have tried to contact TuneEcu for information about Ktm 1190 adventure compatibility but never received a reply

AVL DiTest it is too expensive.

Meanwhile, I continue to play with the telemetry of the ktm 1190 adventure , i have a SOLO DL of the Aim Sportline that i can connect to CAN BUS.
so it is possible merge engine data same as engine speed , both wheel speeds , Gas Handle , throttle position , lateral and longitudinal acceleration , gyroscope and more other parameters...

but i hope in future to have possibility to use tuneEcu also in 1190 adventure.

i have found on web sites http://www.ktm-versand.de a Ktm Dongle that it can be connected to the same diagnostic connector , this is the description :

The ABS dongle enables additional functions in the ABS control module and the ECU (1190 Adventure only).

Available functions:
- 1-channel ABS mode: Locking of the rear wheel is possible; ABS only regulates the front wheel
- ABS mode ""Off"": ABS also remains deactivated when the ignition is switched off and on again

it can be useful if someone use the bike always offroad , but for 100 euros i prefere to switch manually ABS Off ....

last week , first check(1000 kilometer) of my Ktm adventure , 280 euros crazy ! , i think that i will do next check by myself and **** the warranty

2014 KTM 1190R Diagnostic Port Adapter

I ordered parts to make a connector to the 2014 KTM 1190R diagnotic port.

LonElec(http://www.lonelec.co.uk) sells an 'OBD2 16 pin female socket to bare end wires'. Several sites on Ebay sell the 'KTM TuneECU 6 Pin Male Sumitomo Connector For Making - KTM Tune ECU Lead'. See Pic1.

My understanding of the wiring of the KTM diagnostic plug is shown in Pic2. The mapping to from the Sumitomo connector to the OBD2 wires is then shown in Pic3. Note that some OBD2 drawings show signal ground and chassis ground joined, linking ground pin 4 to pin 5.

No luck yet in getting my 1190R to actually interface with my CAN readers. This includes AutoEnginuity. Just for fun, I also tried connecting with the 'KTM User Setting Tool' software used for dirt bikes and the 11-12 1190 RC8 R . KTM sells the connector (part 69029096140) for $500US, and the software is free. http://www.ktm.com/us/dealer-service/service/user-setting-tool.html.

Looks like someone is going to have to crack the proprietary diagnostics software (https://vector.com/vi_news_detail_en,422796,,1291167,detail.html), or hopefully KTM will make a 'User Setting Tool' specifically for the 1190 Adventure.

2014 KTM 1190R ODB-2 CAN Bus Data Logger

I found one supplier that now makes a CAN bus data logger that they say will work for the KTM 1190R.

2D Dwbus & Diebold, http://2d-datarecording.com/en/

They quoted 600 euro for the most basic logger (LG-CANStick1C-000), more for GPS integration.

'System Setup' for the KTM 1190R' was quoted as an additional 250 euro.

Sorry for bringing this thread back from the dead. Has anyone identified what PIDs KTM is using? I appears that it does not use J1979 PIDs for TP, RPM and Gear. I'm trying to get the data passed to Harry's Lap Timer, and the KTM won't communicate to my OBD reader, which defaults to only J1979 supported PIDs.

Thanks!
