Welcome to forum. Your motor is a 2001 year one. There should be the cc's imprinted on the cylinder.

How can I tell if it's a sk mxc or exc
That info is in the VIN#, but as you do not have the frame we need to follow other channels:
- Is there the cc's imprinted on the cylinder?

If it's 01 it shouldn't be a 525, will be a 520. Is it electric start and how many gears?
sx had 4 and exc had 6, unless of course someone converted it into a 6 speed.

Hello, my motor says 00*595*00999*
Vin # VBREXJ4361M331198
Thanks!
VBR= Manufacturer (KTM) and where they are situated.
EXJ= Used for the following 400cc bikes: 400EXC, 400EXC RFS,400TXC. (Also for 200EXC, 250EXC and 600EXC).
4= 4 stroke
3= offroad
6= check digit
1= built in 2001
M= Assembled in Mattinghofen
221198= bikes serial number

The 00* in the motor number tells us the motor was assembled in 2000. The 590 series of motors were built from 1999 to 2007 and used in 250 - 540cc 4 strokes. They had different last number (in the 590 numbers). As example the 594 motor was a 450cc manufactured from 2003 - 2007. I have not managed to find anywhere this clarified, but as I learn more I add what I find into my matrix.
The 00999 is the motors serial number.

OK that makes perfect scense for the vin thanks!

The motor is 595 so is that motor a 2000 520SX in a 2001 400 exc chasss?

No. The KTM motor numbers do not really follow a pattern. It seems to be a "any free number below 1000 will do for this new motor we will make"...

But said that, there is a few on here who has more knowledge re the older bikes/motors than I do. Let's see if we can get one of them to give their opinion about your 595 motor. @augiedoggie @DW

595 is the numbering series for the 400cc engines. The 520 and 525 use 590. To know if the engine is exc or sx I'm unable to determine.
The fact that it doesn't have 6 gears or a starter motor tells me it's an sx engine.
Who would go to the trouble of removing the other 2 gears on an exc?

Post up a picture. I gather this thing might be a bit pieced together, but a few give aways of an sx is the fuel tank is black and not white/clear colour. (Though most the white tanks are brown now)

I looked at the MSO and it is a 2001 400 exc with 2000 400 SX motor which is not what I would do.
My MSO says it is supposed to be engine model 159506134 and it has 059500999. They put in blinkers brake lights but it may run off the battery I don't no if maybe I take off the clutch cover I may find a stator in there. The close ratio gearbox is great on the trails but I will need to add a wide ratio 5th and 6th gear and an e-start. I already have the e-start motor with cable but now I need the start stop buttons, e-start gear and idler gear but I think I still see the starter solenoid.

Thanks,
Blake
