Strange Oil Leak on 2007 SD990

I have a US model 2007 SuperDuke 990. I've done a search on this forum and on another SD forum (which doesn't seem to be very active) and can't find much info. On this forum, one member, "3dforrest", seem to have a similar issue, but it looks like his dealer led him down a rabbit hole and never adequately addressed his issue. In any ever, my issue is this: The wires down on left left side of the battery are wetted with oil. I've done the following diagnostics:

1) The motor is bone dry, so it is is not any gasket or sealing interface on the crankcase, heads, or valve covers. It is not the wire bulkhead seal at the stator cover nor is it the gear sensor o-ring.
2) It is not the crankcase breather.
2) My oil sight tube is not cracked or leaking.
3) My oil reservoir drain plug is tight and is not leaking.
4) It is not left over residue from my last oil change as I used aluminum foil to deflect oil and prevent it from getting on the wires. On top of that I have cleaned the oil numerous times, and it keeps coming back.
5) The the three-prong orange plug on the stator wires is the top level of the leak and that connector gets filled with oil. Everything is dry above that.

Has anyone seen this before and and solved it? To me it looks like capillary action action is pulling oil up the stator wires.

Thanks.

Got pics?

Pablo,

Unfortunately not of my situation, as I didn't take pics before I cleaned it. It will get wetted again with enough miles, but it will take some time before I rack up those miles and take meaningful pictures. I did find a similar picture in another Superduke forum and attached it here. My wires gets more wetted than in that picture, especially the orange/brick red connector which gets filled with oil. The wires below the orange/brick red connector get very wetted as does the portion of left inner wall of the lower cowl that leans up against the wires.

My guess would be the oil tank hose or somewhere near that, I would remove that plastic belly pan fairing, leave it off for a while and spray everything down with brake parts cleaner then find the wet spot after going for a ride.

That oil hose is bone dry. Everything above the orange connector is bone dry. I've done the cleaning ritual a few times and the the orange connector and the wires coming into it seem the most wetted. I'm a former automotive and powersport engineer and have seen oil creep thru wires that weren't potted/sealed, but typically there was a some pressure behind it. Nonetheless, although much rarer, I've seen it driven by surface tension/capillary action. I'm wondering if others are seeing this type of leak in there SD's.
Ge everything cleaned up and dry and blow baby powder all over the areas you suspect. Start the engine and run it but do not ride as wind will not only blow off most of the powder, but it will make it more difficult to trace the leak by blowing the oil to some places other than the leak location.

Hello, I had the exact same oil leak on my 2007 SuperDuke 990. I replaced the stator, which, due to "oil intrusion" (a common theme with Mercedes Benz vehicles) was the culprit. Oil migrates between the wire and insulation and makes it's way to the brown connector.

I'm having the same issue. I think it may be the oil filter o'ring is bad. I cleaned around mine and a few mins later I could see it getting wet with oil again. May not be but that's all I can find on mine after multiple times of taking parts off and riding down the road to get it warm and checking. If it's something else and u found the problem could u email me at [email protected] and let me no please
the most wetted.
I can't bear this any longer. We all know what you mean. Here's a correctly worded reference to something being wet.
