I want to tighten my Gen 3 SDR's neck. I assume the front wheel must be off the ground and the neck must be moveable?? How do I get the bike in that position. I only have normal paddock stands. Or is there a set torque for the neck?

You can ,if you want, just do it on the side stand , slacken the top yoke pinch bolt off and nip up the main nut. I'ts easier to take the clocks off and it's only a 2 min job

Tapered rollers.

Those are after market bearings, most bikes come stock with ball bearings, I am not sure about SD

If they are tapered rollers, do NOT tighten them. They need to be just pre-loaded. Just enough to remove any play where a slight amount of play is considered better than no play at all if you are not sure how to adjust them.
Even if properly adjusted, they often develope a slight amount of play after use, which is considered normal. You are trying to adjust out excess play basically.
Same as your old school Vw wheel bearings on rear drum brakes.

Yup. I've got tapered bearings in my GSXR1000 - the moment the collar is tightened even a little I get steering weave at low speeds. There's a radical difference between tapered v ball type bearings.

They are ball bearings on the sdr , had to grease mine when i changed top and bottom yoke ,,,,might be different on the rr

Yes. Loosen the bolts on the shocks ( top ones), loosen bolt on the side of the top yoke ... Torque to spec and tighten the rest... Mine is 100% now. I am also changing the oil in the damper.

Did you have to remove the bars and gauge cluster like it says in the service manual or were you able to get around doing that?

I moved the TFT a bit fwd - bars not removed - got in with an Allen tool.

Just now replaced the OEM steering damper oil... a MUST do!!

If you're not getting a knock when you brake they'll be ok

I used normal Motul 20W50 engine oil. The oil that came out was very thin. It feel OK pushing by hand - must still rife it.
