Now then,

Any suggestions welcome and appreciated! Im looking to part x for a 1290 but this fault is throwing a spanner in the works!

My SD 990 2008 was sat a while in bits. I've put it back together and the display was fine at first, then the common issue of it scrambling digits started, then only the back light would come on etc. The bike runs fine.

Now, if I disconnect the battery and reconnect it the speedo works. However, it will stop working after a matter of hours.

Fixes ive already tried:
I sent the speedo off for repair / test and it is 100% fine, so no issues there.

Earth's are fine, I belive, clean and solid connection.

Fuses / relays fine.

Ok, this might sound a bit strange, but it worked for my dash cam. I had left it disconnected for a while when my truck was in the shop (someone stole the tailgate). When I finally reconnected it, it was dead. I read a story on line about someone with the same issue who said that after a very hot sunny day, where the temperature inside their car went way up, it spontaneously started working again. He reasoned that there might have been moisture inside that was causing a problem.

So I baked mine at 200 degrees F for a half-hour or so in my oven. Not hot enough to damage anything, but hot enough to turn condensation into vapour. Took it out, let it cool, plugged it in, and it worked.

No idea whether this is the issue with your display, or whether you are desperate enough to cook it, but this was my experience.

Stops working after a few hours....

Sounds possibly "heat+electrical" -related. Something is corroded somewhere and causing resistance, then causes heat..then causes the speedo to stop working. By "stop working", I assume the entire display is non-responsive?

I had a similar problem with my ‘07 990 Speedo as well. When I looked on the old KTM.net, the ground for the speedo was not the one you think it is. It’s the ground for the alarm system (whether you have an alarm or not). It’s on the upper left plug looking at the headlight from the front of the bike. The wiring diadram will give you the color code.
