Most of these crankshaft locking tools can only be inserted and screwed in at a very precise point (normally TDC or close to that point). That's certainly the case on the Rotax-engined Aprilia V twins. I suggest you move the engine over in very small increments (spark plugs out) until you can lock the crank by screwing in the tool.
