OEM KTM top case on SW Motech rack

Has anyone mounted the OEM top case to an SW Motech luggage rack? Tried searching the forum a bit and didn’t find anything about it.

My passenger doesn’t like how far back the top case is using the KTM rack, how much it wiggles and the odd angle the back pad has so I thought I’d try out the SW rack. I will just buy another top case if it can’t be fitted, might do that anyway to see if I can find a pad position that works better for her.

I'm pretty sure it can be done. I emailed SW Motech USA last year with a sorta similar question and they were VERY helpful with how to do what I wanted to do and links to the exact parts I needed.

In your case, I suspect you need:

SW Motech Street Rack
SW Motech Adapter Plate

and then some kit of small parts that mount to the Adapter plate that will be specific to the OEM top case to mount it on the Adapter Plate.

That should mount the top case much more forward on the back of the bike.

Emailed Motech again over the weekend after doing a little more digging and mounting the Street Rack, hoping to hear back soon. If I don’t I may just call later today because I need to get this figured out by next weekend, they hadn’t responded to my earlier email to them anyway.

Right now thought is one of a few things:
1. I buy an adaptor plate, figure out how to mount KTM plate to it. Shouldn’t be too hard, just need a few screws.
2. I THINK the SHAD 2 plate might be the same mounting points as the factory KTM, might buy that adaptor plate. I found an old thread saying it was but I just don’t know for sure and there was no follow up.
3. Last resort is just buy a new top case. I like the size of the KTM one so it’s stupid to replace it but the KTM rack just is weird in its mounting and very flimsy feeling.

I’ll update after I hear back.

Update; email from SW customer service:

Hi Mike,

Unfortunately, I do not have any recommendation or experience with that case. We do have 2 shad adapters for that rack, you can find them here:

You could possible transfer the adapters from your current rack to the adapter plate somehow. It is made of a strong ABS plastic, so it would not be impossible to adapt pieces to it.

Let me know!

Best regards

I decided to order what is called "SHAD 2" adaptor kit and see what it looks like. It's basically the generic adapter plate with SHAD specific mounts bolted on so at worst I am out the $25 extra the brackets cost over the non-specific plate. Hoping it comes early next week so I can see what I am up against.

Final update for those playing along:

SHAD 2 mount from SW Motech fits the OEM case perfectly, even better than the OEM KTM mount and rack. Plus SW street rack puts the case in much closer to the rear seat, way better position, and it’s MUCH sturdier and more solid than the OEM rack. I’ll get pics tomorrow, highly recommend it.
