2023 SDR EVO: Help with throttle tube housing one-way screw removal

Hello all,

I am interested in installing some different grips on my 2023 Super Duke R EVO. I have seen the threads about the odd and difficult stock throttle tube sizing, and so I would either like to get one of the aluminum aftermarket throttle tubes and install grips on those, or at the very least be able to get the throttle tube off of the bike.

However, the 2023 model year’s throttle tube housing has these very odd one-way security screws.

(As can be seen discussed in other threads, the 2023 year uses a different housing here than the 2020-2022, and they returned to the 2022 style in 2024 it appears. So these are not the standard Philips head screws found on the throttle tube housing on the non-2023 bikes.)

I am unable to find any information about these types of screws online, and the parts diagrams are incorrect for this model year and show the 2022’s housing from what I can tell, so those haven’t helped me narrow this down.

They are some sort of one-way screw, but the middle is raised, which would make drilling them with an extractor very difficult. I’m sure there’s some sort of specialty tool but I’m having no luck finding it.

Can anyone provide guidance on how they removed these on their 2023? Or if anyone has information or suggestions.

i bought heated grips and removal was pretty simple, grips are the same for my 22dvo and 24 sas and the 03 evo is also listed. you tube vids make shade tree mechanics out of many of us 'cheapskates' or just guys that like to work on our own bikes.

Yes, that’s what I’m asking here. I am asking how to remove those 2 screws on the bottom of the throttle assembly as pictured. They are some sort of specialty screw and there is no information I can find about them, so I was hoping someone here had information on how to remove them. They are unique to the 2023 model year.

As @Hammerhead mentioned that appears to be a push on style friction holder. You need to grab it with a pick and pull it off then figure out why yours is like that because it doesn’t make sense to use that unless someone snapped a screw off and did that as a cobble fix. You can reuse them a time or two but they tend to get loose if used more than that so you may need to replace it. Easy to find at a hardware store or online.

Did you buy your bike new?

The torx is what holds it on the bar. If I remove that I can remove the whole housing. The 2 (there is one in the other side) security screws (they were Philips on the 2022 and 2024 housings) are what holds the halves of the throttle tube housing together. If I want to separate the halves to get the throttle tube out I need to remove them.

I definitely appreciate the advice, and certainly understand that from the photos I’m able to get, it appears very similar to that style of pin washer. In person though, it is more apparent that it’s some sort of unique security head of a bolt or screw. I had asked in here since I can’t find any information about it or how to remove it online. Others have noted the same thing in the forum post about heated grips on a 2023 SDR EVO. However, in that instance, the solution was just removing the whole throttle tube housing and replacing it with a 2022 style. I am just hoping to open this throttle tube housing to get the throttle tube out, and was hopeful someone here had found out specifically what this fastener head is called and if there’s a unique extractor tip for it. I figured that there’s gotta be someone with a 2023 SDR EVO who had put aftermarket grips on it and had experienced the same thing.

This image is the closest thing I found that is similar to what this fastener head looks like, but not exactly the same. It’s the same general shape and shows the “raised center and tapered fins” type of thing, but unfortunately doesn’t appear to be the same as KTM uses. I think the answer may be dremel and flat head screw driver but wanted to check here first for advice for anyone with specifically a 2023 SDR EVO who had replaced the grips and removed the throttle tube.

Thank you for the suggestions though and I sincerely appreciate the effort to help. I do agree that it’s quite odd that KTM utilized these fasteners and a different throttle tube housing on the 2023 iteration, and then returned to the 2022 style in 2024

. KTM things I suppose lol

If you do try the dremel method and jank up the housing you can always go with the other option, purchase the 2022 throttle housing. In the grand scheme it probably isn't that expensive and will allow you to move on to the next thing.

I guess a third option (if you are good with tools) is to carefully drill a hole dead-nuts center and use an easy-out to extract the funky bolts and replace with standard phillips head screws. Again, if you jank up the housing, proceed to option 2.

Here is an all-in-one extractor set maybe worth considering.

Cheers

Once I looked at your pic using the mirror for reference it's clearly different. My 22 evo, and 24 sas work the same so I just figured KTM would use the same part for the 23 1290's. If you tried ignoring it while only removing the screws the instructions show, I got nothing.
