TC, QS, LC problems in 1390 SDR

I bought a new motorcycle, and after 200 km it started having electronic problems. When I stopped the motorcycle by pressing the clutch or putting it in neutral, the TRACTION CONTROL error appeared, deactivating it. When I turned the motorcycle off and on again, everything returned to normal. At the next stop, it happened again.

After several stops, the QUICK SHIFT started to malfunction, deactivating the gear engaged on the display (nothing appears). This is not solved by turning the motorcycle off and on again; the QUICK SHIFT function and the gear engaged remain deactivated forever.

Now I can't see the gear engaged, but the TRACTION CONTROL errors continue to appear. Sometimes they are even accompanied by small jerks at low speed. There are even START CONTROL errors (I understand this to be LAUNCH CONTROL). Once, the motorcycle even started to sound as if it were running on a single cylinder, with erratic idling and a LOW OIL PRESSURE error. Everything was solved by turning the motorcycle off and on again, and everything was fine again, except for the gear display.

I also can't start the bike if the side stand is down, even though it's actually in neutral. It only starts if I'm on the bike, with the side stand up, the clutch engaged, and the bike in neutral.

Once the bike is started and in neutral, if I put the side stand down, the bike stalls.

I cannot enable the QUICK CHANGE option from the menu. If I change it from OFF to ON, it flashes ON and then finally returns to OFF.

I cannot enable the MTC + MSR option from the menu. If I change it from OFF to ON, it flashes ON and then finally returns to OFF.

When I turned the motorcycle off and on again, everything returned to normal, ONLY THE MTC + MSR. The QUICK SHIFT continues disabled.

I have also noticed that when riding at very low speeds (without the clutch engaged), the motorcycle becomes very unstable, as if the throttle position sensor is not working properly, cutting out and accelerating without me moving the throttle, causing jerks.

CONTROL CRUISE does not work; it cannot be activated.

The oil pressure sensor appears to be working correctly. Maximum temperature 85-90Âş C.

At the dealership, they synchronized the gears and adjusted the QUICK SHIFT, and everything was working correctly. The gear engaged was showing on the screen, but after a few kilometers, everything failed again.

Currently, I don't have QUICK SHIFT and I can't see the gears on the screen, although no error light comes on, only when I stop the bike or ride at very low speed playing with the clutch.

Has this happened to anyone else?
What could it be?
A problem with one of the crankshaft position sensors?
The neutral sensor?
The clutch actuator sensor (small plunger)?

Thanks!!

Hello and welcome to forum. I can understand your frustration with your expensive motorcycle and it's troubles. We have all experienced similar frustrations. I would offer a bit of advice to all forum members to remind you all that our forum, while sometimes helpful for sharing service and repair hacks, is not a cure all for bike problems. You may require professional assistance and perhaps a bit(lots) of luck sorting technical issues. If your dealer service department is unable to solve your service issues, you may find KTM corporate customer service can assist? Our forum members are always willing to assist other owners when possible but will volunteer information to solve complaints only when possible. Forum members and staff are unpaid and are not obligated to assist service issues. I would refer those problems to KTM corporate or your local or regional KTM reps.

Hey Jack....sorry to hear of the difficulties you're having with the new 1390.

Most if not all 1390 owners have dealt with some subset of the issues you are detailing in your post above. But, I have to say, you are the first I've heard of with every possible issue one could possibly have happening on one bike!

I believe the majority of 1290/1390 owners have found that poor battery condition (and/or a poor chassis ground) is the most common cause of electronic issues on these bikes. I know your bike is new and the battery should be as well but even new batteries left to sit for moderate periods of time can lose voltage and damage a cell or three at which point they are useless, especially in this application.

At a minimum you need to keep a lead-acid battery on a battery tender of some sort (not sure what options you have in Spain) 24/7/365 when not in use. If your battery has a damaged cell (or cells) no amount of charging will fix the issue, the only option is replacement. If you choose to got this route, a good quality LiFePo battery would be a better option than lead-acid.

If I were in your situation, I would trace and double check all ground points to make sure paint has been removed and all are tight and contamination free. The next thing I would do is buy a REALLY good quality (read, not Chinese crap) LiFePo battery. If these steps do not cure your issues then put the lead-acid battery back in the bike and call KTM Europe. They're going to want to make/keep you happy as they need good repeat customers to survive...especially after the shenanigans the previous CEO pulled.

Once sorted I think you'll really appreciate what this bike is really capable of.

Good luck and keep us advised of your progress. Oh, and find another dealer! They should not be giving up on a customer that just dropped 25k euros on a bike.

Cheers

Hi John,

First of all, thank you very much for responding.

I should mention that the motorcycle is under warranty, so if it is necessary to replace the battery, they will have to do it themselves.

The last battery on my 1290 lasted three years. I rode it at least once a week, so it never had time to discharge. Once, after two and a half years, I left it unused for a month while I was on vacation, and then it was difficult to start. I charged the battery properly and it worked fine.

The reason I wrote here was to try to get ahead of the dealer, as they seem to have no idea and are asking KTM GLOBAL.

Of course, I'll write down my progress and once it's fixed, I'll post it here.

Thank you very much!
