I was having issues a few weeks ago with my 2008 KTM 530 EXC not starting. It was getting hung up on the compression stroke and wouldn't turn over.
Well, I've fixed that by installing an '09 cam and slightly tightening the exhaust valve clearance. But now, the motor will just turn over and over and won't start. It will occasionally pop and backfire. Below is a list of things I've done:
1). I've confirmed the engine timing is correct by locking the engine in top dead center (TDC) by tightening the bolt without the washer on the right side of the bike near the water pump. When it's locked in TDC, the marking on the cam and on the cylinder head line up at 12 o'clock.
2). Took out the spark plug, tested using the e-starter, and I see the spark.
3). Emptied carb float chamber and still could not start. The fuel I'm using has been sitting in my gas tank open in my garage for about 2-3 weeks. I don't think the fuel is old enough to be the cause.
Any other ideas? Is the compression too low? Could the cylinder head gasket be damaged and letting air out? Is the engine running lean? Could the timing be off even though the cam markings line up when in top dead center?
What's interesting is that before I swapped out the cams, it would start using the e-starter and kick starter simultaneously, but it wouldn't start just using the e-starter or kick starter alone. I haven't removed or messed with the carb or air filter.
Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.
