+1. The difference between the 690 and 1290 is how easily it goes fast. They are both fast. I prefer longer gears at the sacrifice of take off. I had 16/42 on my 690 and thought it was great. Hit 112 once. The wind was nuts. I do 112 on the SDR effortlessly. Just roll it on in 4th.

Can anyone verify that the stock length chain on a 2016 Duke will accomodate 15T-42T sprockets? Have you done this conversion to your bike?

Since stock is 16T-40T, I would expect enough chain length/adjustment to handle the addition of one tooth total.

thanks in advance!

the 42T arrived yesterday and I installed it with the 15t.

I installed the 15t last week since the 42 was backordered. Just like the other members reported, you install the 15 and you want more.

The 15/42 is a much better gear ratio. Way, way more fun in the lower speeds. Freeway speeds are approx. 6th gear 6k at 80mph.

To answer your question, the 15/42 fits with the rear blocks turned around.

Change the ratio, you'll never look back. Well hopefully not.

Best!

I've thought about it, but I can't really imagine having to do 6K at 80. 5K is annoying enough. I guess if you VERY rarely have to get on the highway.

For blasting the traffic from the lights , boldor gearing(15/42) works , maybe even a 15/44-45 against a bigger street fighter bike. Cruising 120KM+ is revvy.

On the flip side I cant imagine using such extreme low gearing. Even for drag racing from lights. With 16/42 gearing, in first gear, there's just no way I can using anything even close to full throttle without looping out. I've even experimented with second gear starts using more clutch to avoid the wheelie.

Besides, in Texas we run 80 mph a lot. Even in town. :)

You know there are 5th AND 6th gears after Fouth - right?

Ooohps, I realised that you might've been working in Stoneage Units and came back to edit.

80 = 130 km/h. Who does that schit anyway? Even on our "motorways", our top speed is 110 km/h. Travelling at 130 anywhere is a serious health hazard here in Australia. Not because Speed Kills, but I have heard prison food can.

If I did just 30 km/day on high speed, multi-laned highways, I would not consider a Duke. For me, the Duke is a bank robber's bike that gets you from A to B, through tight streets and heavy traffic, quickly. There is the added benefit of not developing road rage because you can take a journey that causes most car drivers to have an aneurysm into a fun-filled, act of hooliganism.

Gear it Down

Many roads will be 70 or 75 mph speed limits, so people usually go 80 mph+.

I don't ride frequently at that speed, but sometimes I make a 1-2 hour highway run to get to 8+hours of twisty roads.

count me as a 15-42 convert

I made the change to 15-42 from the stock 16-40. Considering the gearing is "only" lowered by 12% ([42/15]/[40/16] = 1.12), the difference is huge.

Throttle roll ons in second gear now lift the front wheel unintentionally when the engine "comes on the cam." Too cool. Intentional power only wheelies in second are now very easy.

If I did not know better, I would think the bike gained 20% more power. Since the bike is only taching 5000 rpm at 66 mph with the lower gearing, I would not hesitate to cruise at 80 mph (approx. 6100 rpm) when the situation demands it.

I always thought the bike felt like it was geared too high, I had to force myself to upshift one less time than I normally would upshift at given speed. The gearing change proves it to me. Lets face it, the 2016 Duke engine likes to rev.

I never tried a top speed run, but I would think the bike will now pull redline in sixth (118 mph), whereas before, I seriously doubted the bike would pull redline in sixth (133 mph) with the stock gearing. It would not surprise me if top speed in now a few mph higher than before.

Unless you spend a lot of time above 75 mph, I think most riders will be happier with the lower gearing. Much peppier! Makes one even more of a juvenile delinquent than before.

Someone Talking about ME?

I guess that the KTM answer is a 1290R, but, my buddy got one and he has dropped 1T on the counter sprocket as the stock bike is geared too tall. And, his 1290R is hidden under blankets in his garage in the hopes that the police will give up looking for him at some point, as absolute power corrupts absolutely.
Hey, I resemble that remark!!!

True Story. Happened more than once with this Beast! This time, after stumbling across my Wanted Poster in the local Marshal's Office, on top of the [now routine] hiding it in the far corner of the garage under a blanket, I had to step it up and partially disassemble it to support my claims that it was all broken down (you know how unreliable KTM's are, right?) and not even capable of being ridden. ...For months!

And that is where it still sits to this day! :crying2:

Oh, Tetge can confirm that I have ALL kinds of issues!

I was just fortunate to get a double wide, double deep garage when I moved into my current place. What you don't see is all the clutter that is on this side of the bikes, out of the frame of the shot. If I would finally unpack all my junk and throw away what I haven't used in the last 3.5 years since being here I would have a HUGE space, with a couple of nice work benches, access to some wall mounted cabinets and all sorts of good stuff.

Sadly, that project would likely be about as complex as an Archeology Dig site in Peru or something. So for now, like the SDR, it sits.

Need new chain? Going from stock gearing to 15-42 aka Boldor Special

Got a '17 Duke with about 1,500 miles on it.

Last night I finally got around to putting on the 15T front sprocket I bought when I got the bike. As expected, I liked the result and now want go for the "full Boldor" - as support for it seems pretty universal.

Question: will my chain have enough slack to accommodate the bigger rear without being overly tight? I know I've gained a bit of slack by dropping a tooth in the front, but my understanding is that won't fully offset the increase in the rear.
