The problems with the duke are such that it gets to a point when u stop imagining and face reality. noise upon noise!

I hear what you're saying but its more mental than actual, after my own Problem with the rocker replacements my own fear/paranoia got me for a while, still does sometimes only because i'm so anal and pick on every quality issue, but its no different to most other bikes i've owned, each having their own unique fcukups, how many times have they won the Dakar, yeah, slightly different engine maybe, but they're out there, lots of them..
I think some folk just picked the wrong bike.
(now,I will laugh if mine broke on the next ride, but doubt it, just got my new tyres, worn the chicken strips off on the way home, they are one Fun bike!!
:)

My 2013 R makes the kind of mechanical noised that you would expect from a highly tuned single cylinder engine. It has a 2 year warranty so if there are any mechanical failures in that time I will have them repaired free of charge. Seems a bit odd to me buying a new bike with a warranty and then pulling it apart.

My background is in old Brit stuff so maybe I'm used to top end racket. If I could get my Commando to be as quiet as the Duke I'd be very happy.

Quoted for truth.

The only reason mine went noisy is because I let the oil get lower than it wanted. Live and learn.

Ticking over 14000 miles now, which is almost 4000 since the top end rebuild, and with dutiful care over the oil it is as quiet as when new.

I believe the suspect nĂşmero uno has been found, just had 20,000 Km service done, was noisier than ever after the guys checked the cam bearings, found 2mm difference in lift height on one of the rockers rollers, you know the little roller that runs on the cam, definitely some scoring on the cam and if I'm not mistaken, the roller appears a bit "sticky".

The tolerances were okay, but I think I have a bent rocker ???? Maybe twisted is the correct wording, as tolerances didn't seem out, just one side seemed higher, hope you get what I mean.

4hrs spent on a log weekend, 26th January is Australia Day, with some patience and a lot of help from Bundy Bear (cans of rum) I will endeavor to persuade the KTM boys at the LBS to check it out for me.

Didn't someone mention rockers before?????

How did you get them done, under warranty?????

Hyperpete had his done while up here in Cairns mate, if I remember correctly he put it in and the apprentice found it then put the claim in after a bit of non-urgency from Mark :tongue_smilie:

Thanks Dan, appreciate the heads up.

I think the problem is that most KTM shops don't see many "bigger" bikes, mainly dirties and all things off road, I have to be confident the shop guys know what they are doing, but like most of us, probably like to know we aren't nuts and I feel a little happier now knowing that I believe I have a "real issue", it's not just me babying the Duke.

If I wasn't covered in oil and soaked to the skin in Bundy :tongue_smilie:, I probably should've taken photos, oh we'll, will see how I go with the KTM guys.

Here in the states, nobody has a clue what a KTM street bike is. Very few places sell them and those that do, generally don't get them in for service because they're generally bought by aficionado's who do their own work. Plus, they're reliable little bikes, I can't imagine having a serious "warranty" related issue with the thing in the first 2 years of ownership. Sure the valve tick noise was annoying, but outside of that, didn't have a lick of issues that would be considered "warranty".

I was going to bring my Duke to a dealer and have the valve tick diagnosed. But when I talked with technician's at multiple dealers about the issue, nobody really had a clue what they were talking about. It amazed me how "lost" they seemed for trained KTM mechanics. :(

I hope its different in other countries where KTM street bikes are more popular, but in the US, its a crap shoot!

No, its not much different downunder, that tech that diagnosed my fault up in Cairns seemed to have a unique passion, my local dealer doesn't appear to have that..
They're about to get a shop full of big roadies as well as a full compliment of Dukes, can only wonder how they do it..
But, I've found not much difference in other shops with previous bikes..sadly is a lack of care factor I think.
:(

Interesting comments on dealers: my local is a multi-franchise - Yam/honda/kwak/Ducati/Victory/Suzuki/KTM. Its like Alladin's cave!!
Had some warranty work done no questions asked - not the cheapest, but can't recommend highly enough.

As for engine noises: mine sounds like a rattlesnake in a lucky dip at around 3000 RPM. Keep stoking her & ride between 4 & 6000, & all is good....

Ohh trust me, the noise is still there. It turns into a vibration noise instead of a rattle. Its actually more scary sounding at higher RPM's. I had to wear ear plugs because it was bothering me so much, sounded like the motor was gonna go pop at any second. :(

Is that P&H in Crawley?

Hey Hyperpete,

When the KTM guys replaced your rockers did they use the original part numbers - 75036060044 and 75036061044, because it appears that these are exactly the same part numbers for Duke 3 & 4.

These are superseded now, so assuming the known issues with Duke 3 rockers, why the hell would KTM continue to use the same part in the Duke 4?

Just trying to solve the non-chalant attitude with my Local KTM Shop, they aren't concerned at all by the scoring on the rollers or the buzzing/rattling I have coming from the valve train.

Below is the proof of new parts available, but they said I'd have to pay for the parts and labour as they didn't think it was an issue, Wasn't the best visit and walked away feeling like they had "bum pirated" me.

Any advise other that ring KTM Australia ????

Hi Kat01,
I never did find out which rockers arms went in, but its been good ever since (10,000km)..
I rang KTM in WA to clarify the eta of the parts because the service guy was in perpetual panic and thought it could take a week or two...oh is that all I thought..

anyway, KTM warranty guy was real nice, well..he ought to be..apologised for the failure, said the bits are(were) already on their way..
despite the moron on the service desk I am very lucky I had the German tech comment on the apparent noise, otherwise it would've snapped somewhere outback..
anyway, I'm rattling on :)
I'd ring KTM : 08 935 14771, like I said they were very helpful, ask to speak to a warranty person...
I'll be moving the Duke before warranty expires, one reason mainly the dealer care factor and as well, I'm not confident it will be happy in high km, I'm at 39,000km now, I suppose that confidence really comes from the dealers.

Thanks Hyperpete,
Will do as you suggested, give them a call and explain it's been twice as bad since 20,000K service, I feel bad but I'm going to take it to Hornsby KTM, I just don't have the confidence with the locals anymore, there are only something like 8 Dukes between the 2 shops, including 200's.
Mine is the only one Duke 4 on the central coast, that's what KTM boys said.
Thanks again.
