SW-Motech has recently updated its Pro Blaze side bags — mounting hardware, to be precise. The new set that is marked for 1290/1390 leaves smaller parts connected to the bike when the bags are off. Not a dramatic change but a welcomed improvement, IMHO.

Looks like it will work with a tail tidy too

I’ve used SW-Motech PRO REARBAG tail bag for the last couple of years as a carryover from my previous bike. This bag works well for my needs capacity-wise, but height-wise, with the 20mm sport link it’s quite a challenge to mount and dismount the bike. So, I am considering side bags instead.
  • SW-Motech Pro Blaze bags (that I posted above) – I like that bags are easier to install, but I am not a big fan of how this system covers the pillion seat esthetics-wise, and more importantly, I guess it can be a challenge to keep the bags clean. I would expect them to pick up a lot of bugs and dust.
  • SW-Motech Urban ABS bags – I like the look of the bags and the cleaner setup when installed, however, I will have to take off and on the SLC side carriers each time I need the bags (3-4 times per season, seems to be a 20 min job). ABS plastic should be easier to deal with.
I am leaning toward the Urban set but wanted to check with the community in case there is any first-hand experience with these options and any additional inputs I should consider.

I have the Blaze, they excel at being the bags you use a few times a year but if I was running full time I’d go hard side cases. The blaze are ridiculously easy to throw on and off when you want and matched with my KTM tail bag give me decent storage for a longer trip. Taking the blaze bags and their support arms off takes a minute and you’re done. I don’t even notice the clips when they’re off. They’re just soft sided and any locking attempt is minimal at best for effectiveness, hence why hard sided wins for a full time usage.

Thanks for sharing your experience with the Blaze bags. It’s helpful.

I have the PowerParts bags but I was highly considering the SW Urban instead. The only reason I decided on the PowerParts was shipping was faster. Mounting hardware is minimal and not terrible on the eyes with the bags off. I just wish they were waterproof. And the latch is a little stubborn to remove them at times. 95% of the time the bags stay on my bike so it's not a big deal.

Only picture I have handy with the bags off to show the mounting hardware. Also, that trash can looks familiar @_Will_ LOL

The PP option (white labeled SW-Motech Urban with different mounting option) looks great, but it won’t work with the Evotech tail tidyI have on the bike.

A sport rack to replace the passenger seat, then a top case….is an option…

Based on the ideas I found in this tipic I also want to mount a top case on the passenger seat for an upcoming trip. A second hand case is on its way (Givi V40). For mounting a decision still needs to be made mount the Givi interface plate (E251) to:

1. A second hand seat ($60)
2. A second hand H&B plate ($110)

Considerations:

A. With the seat the case seems to remain more horizontal whereas with the plate it's a bit tilted. Maybe the latter helps reducing the gap between case and rider resulting in less turbulence....?
B. The seat will have the padding squeezed by the interface plate where with the plate a stiffer mounting can be realized.
C. Although the plate has some foam lining beneath, water ingression seems a concern to me

Based on experiences here, what would be the better solution?

I used a second had seat on my previous 690 for a small top case and that’s fine if you are mechanically inclined using fastenters, bushings, washers etc. If you want a topcase larger than 13L , i recommend the H&B plate. I run a 34L top case and would not use a second hand seat as it’s flimsy plastic. The h&b is a very solid design. Also, given the top speed and acceleration capabilities of these bikes , I would not use a passenger seat at a mount. Just my advice.

here is a picture of when I used a spare seat to mount a small case - you can search the details on the 690 forum:

the other advantage of the h&b plate is it has slots that I can strap other items on if needed ..

Thank you for sharing your setup(s) and advice. Based on this I ordered the H&B plate.
In order to fit the case as far backward for me to sit comfortably I had to trim the rear "strapping slots" off. Reason being the universal Monokey plate being quite a bit larger then the monolock plate.
For the rest, as you mentioned, everything is very solid. Time for a test drive with a loaded case in due time. At the same time I'll shoot some pictures and upload them here.

Took a bit more time (to get nice weather and the time to upload the pictures here , I'm also loosing my picture upload virginity on this forum so I hope all is good :D), but below some pictures of my setup:

Hepco and Becker plate + Givi Monokey universal plate + Givi V40
